Bowmouth: of course thats possible, but in every sport illegal things may happen. with the same arguments you could block people from renting a car or motorbike (making car races, theach the friend, drive drunk).

@ If you rent a car you need a drivers license and also sign a rental agreement. If you drive drunk, race with the car and/or teach your friend to drive and create an accident or get caught by the police you get a fine, end up in jail or in the hospital or both.
If you teach your friend scuba and something goes wrong you or your friend may die. If you go spear fishing with scuba or collect shells and coral you may kill what most other divers would love to see alive.

It would mean to forbid every diving without a company.

No it doesn't. You could always buy your own tank and get that filled or even get your own small compressor and do the filling yourself. And there are still a few dive shops on the island that do rent out tanks with air to certified divers.

As for Thailand there is no law which does not allow me to instruct my friend without beeing certified.

@It hasn't much to do with the law at all. It has to do with common sense. If a diveshop rents out their tanks (and/or other equipment) to a certified diver and he or she is going to teach a friend and something goes terribly wrong then it's their equipment that gets confiscated by the police and it's their name that will end up in news articles. Now that's not the advertisement someone really wants to get.

If someone is certified as OW, AOW or higher that should be enough to know what they are doing.

@Basically what you're saying is that a diver with 4 to 10 Open Water dives under his belt (and most of those under direct supervision of an Instructor) is capable enough to go diving all alone, teach a friend to scuba dive and maybe start a career as salvage diver? I promise you; they can not....

:D

yes of course you are right!
But with say 50 dives he and his buddy can take a tank and dive arround on easy places. If he tells the dive shop he just dives there at the 8 meter deep place/warm water/no current and relly he makes something different the DC is not respondsible.
And why many don't give tanks at all? Because there might be 1 stupid diver?

You know some dive shops that rent cars and motorbikes? If you are talking about car rental companies, I think it's what they do for a living. On the other hand, dive shops sell gear, train divers and take people on trips for a living. Renting a tank is rather small incidental income to a few shops that maybe trust you too much.

I'm sure you can find one to sell you a tank.;)

Stunning quote of the year. I see a Darwin Award in your buddy future.

You know it is not many years ago were Hans Hass and Cousteau started with that and they had no PADI certificate. Others sports like mountain climbing are more dangerous than SCUBA and you can do it without any certificate.
The ways how you do it safe are not top secrect, if someone just don't follow it, it is their own problem. We don't need anyone nanny taking care.

Don't missunderstand me, I am extrem carefully, but if someone makes anything stupid it is his/her own decision and life. If you follow only the PADI OW book you can not do wrong, because it tells in every second sentence, if you have doubts don't do it, if not sure ask a DM and so on.
If you just don't follow the rules it is your problem and you may win the Darwin Award.
(I'll not win it, because I dive only within my limits, but I don't need a DC telling me that they don't rent me tanks because they know better whats good for me)

I have a small dive shop/resort here in the Philippines. I do not rent out tanks, at all. I do not have the time to chase around making sure they have all been returned etc. If you dont dive with us dont use our tanks. You can dive here with your tanks. Its cheaper to use ours though. That is just our policy. I mean a 200 dollar tank with someone you dont know for only 3 dollars? Not me.

However, we do not go telling people it is because of some tourist association law. I tell them we just dont do it, and if we do it for you then we have to do it for everyone.

There's nothing wrong with a couple of experienced and certified divers going out on a fundive without joining a daytrip with a Dive Centre. But there are MANY reasons why a Dive Centre just doesn't want to rent a couple of tanks to individuals they do not know. The risk THEY take is just not worth it for them.
If you like to be an independent diver and NOT join an organised and supervised daytrip you better buy your own tanks and a small compressor and dive as much as you like and where you like.:D

For me anyhow no problem, but not really nice for the usual tourist. Who has to pay a lot more than necessary and he can't go away from the major dive sides (it would be another long discussion if it wouldn't be a desaster if all the tourists go with fisherboats to somewhere, damaging a lot and get lost).

Goodness gracious me.

I have rented tanks before to a couple of people who I knew well, or who were regular customers, people I had dived with in the past etc... But in general, if it was me, and someone I did not know asked to just rent gear, I would say no, or if they wanted a cheap dive I'd send them somewhere that does beach dives.

You know guys sometimes we nasty instructors who love spending money on travel, kit, accomadation, health insurance, pensions, savings, food, oh and phoning home once a month, love and find nothing better than too say “we think your ****”!!

We don't get as much pleasure saying that, as we should. As lol we could lose the above, well apart from the call home. But we will get fired, P45, your sacked, and your ****ed!

You know guy's today email is a powerful tool, we can ask for a Kosher meal on our flight to Thailand we can pay for a bottle of Dom Perignon, 1970 in our BMW that takes us too the Ritz on 7 mile beach." "Sorry love" I booked the tickets, soughted the hotel or condo, No YHA on Grand Cayman I have you know. But God dam I forgot to let Sunset House know I was going too bring my Twins.
Yeah Man great; on top of the other 60 + divers this” MORNING” you now come to us with this, thanks!

Chaps, it's really your fault. You might turn up in Speedo's or as we like to call them BUGGIE SMUGLERS. Or you might turn up in white socks and be a little tubby but at the end of the Day do not contrast this sport to rock climbing do not for one New York minute think we don’t wont you to have fun. Do not think that we don’t know you forgot to use the Internet and check out lets say Divetec or the public Beach dive companies.
But shag me silly with a wet kipper and call me Judy. Use this powerful tool at your fingertips and “FRICKING ASK US ! Rather than just turn up and assume.

There are some quality Dive School owners on this site who would be more than happy to explain how to get to first base camp on K2.

If only they was asked.

We could of explained.

I really don't understand that posting.....
topic was that a DC does not give tanks for rent because TAT/law of Thailand does not allow it. At the moment I am not interested in a base camp on the K2 (but if I need later I'll contact you), meanwhile you may explain the situation about not giving tanks for rent because it is against Thailands (TAT) law. Or if that DC just think "we can fake these stupid tourists with telling some bs, thats easier than telling we just don't want"
