LVX:
There still is...

LOL -- that wasn't the question. I KNOW there is now....I just don't think there was one in 1965. The Galveston campus isn't that old.

It's been around since the '60's, but only starting gaining (cough) notoriety in the 1980's. Up until the late '70's, it was primarily known as a merchant marine academy.

There's a misprint in that article. The Clipper was never a research vessel. She was always the training ship for the middies. They must be confusing the Gyre, which was recently retired. Both the Clipper and Gyre have maroon hulls, so it's easy for aggies to confuse them.

"Current Status

As of October 30, 2006

Work on the Texas Clipper has been progressing for the past few weeks, strengthening the hull for the trip down to Brownsville. Now the hull must be cleaned to prevent the transfer of any biological organisms from the Sabine-Neches estuary to the Lower Laguna Madre. It will be scraped clean of her beard of algae, barnacles and other encrusting organisms. Preparations for towing her have been underway, ensuring proper ballast and appropriate tug attachment. Final plans are being made and appropriate reports are being filed. We anticipate that she will depart Beaumont within the week, but that is dependent on the timing of the work to make her ready and a cooperative weather pattern."

Back when she was still our training ship, rumour had it that she didn't actually have any metal in her hull anymore, just successive series of thick maroon paint.

Any chance we they might publish the deck plans, estimated depth, average currents, and what they are leaving in place?

Sounds like a 4 day get away…
