That echoes my experience. On my currently rapidly discharging Teric it was fine in storage when I bought it until I went on a LOB. Then it developed the fast discharge in storage problem. Sent it in to be repaired and it was fine until I went on another LOB. Now it's rapidly discharging again in storage. My second Teric went on the same LOB as the first one in May and it seems fine. *shrug*
That's what you would see with different battery capacities though. They would both last a fairly long time when still new and stored and not in use.
Once you start using and charging them, the cell with the worse capacity would seemingly age and lose capacity much faster.

As I said, you can only really check for capacity when you fully charge and let the device run until it dies. Ideally in a mode with the highest draw.
If two devices run the same length of time at the same temperature from full to empty but one of them discharges faster in storage, you know it's not a capacity issue. You can still try it.

My first Teric had a black screen. That would have ended the dive if I didn't have a backup AI computer. It was repaired. The AI antenna went out. That would also have ended the dive without the backup. This was replaced.

My second Teric had a bad battery and was replaced. That was just a nuisance.

My third Teric had an antenna failure and was replaced. Again, would have ended the dive without backup.

My fourth Teric had a bad battery and was replaced, another nuisance.

My fifth Teric had a bad battery and was replaced, another nuisance.

My sixth Teric flashed like the flashlight function before turning off. Neither Dive-Tronix nor Shearwater had seen this before and electively replaced it. I don't know if this would have affected performance, I have not heard back from Shearwater yet regarding their diagnostics.

My seventh Teric just had an antenna failure and will be replaced when I return from a non-diving family vacation. This required a backup.

My eighth Teric will be perfect :)

So, at least 4 of 8 problems I have had required a backup not to have affected the dive.
I got back my Teric from Dive-Tronix yesterday, another example of excellent, fast service. I mailed it off last Wednesday and had it back in hand 1 week later.

So, I don't have Teric 8, but a repaired Teric 7. According to the work order, "Unit will only receive AI signal when placed against working transmitter. Air integration antenna was found to have broken loose from the solder joint on the circuit board. Antenna was re-soldered, and unit now works as it should. This appears to be an assembly failure."

The dive log on the computer was still intact. Everything else had to be set up, it did not take long, I've practiced.

This will be the one. :)

Well the battery is definitely going on my primary, my computer sat after charging due to the hurricane.
48 hours was 92% now a full week it is now at 80%. Battery was last changed 08/27/20222.

My backup was at 100% after 48 hours and still at 94% after a week. This battery was last replaced 02/02/2023.

As mentioned previously my normal usage is diving once a week which uses about 10% of the battery before it starts dying. Charging it about once a month. So very low wear for a quality battery.

I’m diving in Sea of Cortez now and I think my Teric antennae is broken. Yesterday it didn’t read pressure for the first time after I opened the tank valve before going diving.

I thought the transmitter battery was bad since it’s been running since brand new for over 500 dives. So, I replaced the transmitter’s battery (CR2) and check for pressure again. The Teric read pressure when I sticked it next to the transmitter and lost communication when I wear it on my wrist.

The Teric battery has been bad too. It lose the battery capacity about 10% / day when it’s in storage. After 4th dive of the day, it was down to 40%. So it used up 15% battery capacity / dive.

I’ll send it out for repair when I get home.

Too bad Dan - hopefully, you have a backup transmitter or SPG so as to avoid any impact to your diving.

These multiple and recurring issues are more than a bit concerning for a company with an otherwise great reputation like Shearwater.

I think it’s time for a Teric 2 to address the issues that seem to plague some Terics - while my latest (3rd battery fix after original) is OK and I can deal with recharging, it is starting to drain at rates higher than it really should.

I still like the form factor, display and features of the Teric (esp the floating compass) but I could not, in good conscience, recommend the Teric at this point.

A backup transmitter will not help with a broken antenna in the Teric. A second AI computer would continue to work as the transmitter is OK. That happened to me in Malpelo (diving with @Dan). That is another clue to the antenna problem in addition to working just when in contact with the transmitter. The Teric continues to work normally with the exception of the tank pressure. Without a second AI computer, you need a SPG.

Good point - wasn’t thinking straight o_O. SPG is the only fix if Teric antenna is broken. Thx.

I dive with a Teric and a Perdix 2 along with a Swift and Yellow SW transmitter - so have full redundancy (also have a hosed SPG in my dive bag as well).
