I've let myself be talked into diving this weekend at Portage Quarry. I was wondering if anybody knows what the temps have been there recently? I'm just curious whether or not hypothermia is going to set in before I submerge, and how big the crane will have to be to haul me and the block of ice I'm in out of the water when I'm finished with the dive:11:
Actually I think it will be OK, I'm just curious about the temps

I'm not real sure how long it's open. It's been about 2-1/2 months since I dove there last. The web site says it's open until Labor Day, or later as weather permits. This is my first year of diving, but I heard my instructor say that he dives through December, although I think he'll be switching to a dry suit soon.

To answer your question about Portage, apparently you must have to call. My instructor called last night to confirm they would be open today. We got there and they were not. He called again, and the guy said they decided not open after all. SO we went to White Star. The water temp was 54 at depth. A surprising number of people there today, but that was apparently because of some program they had there yesterday

54 degrees...man, that's definitely not for me. I've done the Portage-in-November thing once, and that was plenty. :)

54 Degrees! YIKES. I definitely made the right decision to put the scuba gear away and get out the skis for tuning.

I'm so sad that diving season is over though :( for me at least. Can't wait until next year :D I'm hoping since I finally have all my own equipment etc, I will be able to make it to more quarry events and M & G's. Hoping to finally meet some of you

White Star was 53 degrees at the bottom of the crusher yesterday. My dive buddy and I were the only people in the water and viz was 40 - 60 feet. I love it when it gets cold. Less people, better viz.

Note: We left a plastic penguin where the tunnel opens into the crusher. If you move it, please post an approximate location (or clues) so we can search for it.
