I am looking for some input on what type of regulators I should consider for tech diving in the Great Lakes I am currently using apeks ATX 40 regulator has worked great but now I'm looking at going deeper maybe using mixed gas I am looking at a new apek 50 maybe a Poseidon there are other apex to choose from like 100 the200 I guess I just want something simple and reliable and works good and cold water with hi flow rate

Well my advice as far as Poseidon goes is this. They are nice regs, and reliable, and are known for deep water performance, but if you decide to go that route, know that they are very very pricey to maintain, and they are not a reg every tech is capable of servicing. I owned one because I was heading down the tech route myself, then when I clued into how pricey they are to maintain, I ebay'd it before it cost me money and bought Zeagles. I love the Zeagles, which are very similar to Apeks, and both are well known for being reliable regs for tech diving.

Out of curiosity, which of the Great Lakes are you located on?

Jim

95% of my diving is in the St. Clair River lake Huron is the lake I'd say about an hour north of Detroit

Well one other thing to consider is the ability to get service done, and parts. Damn near anyone can service Apeks or Zeagles, and they use standard hoses. Poseidon uses their own hoses, which are really expensive as well. Plus depending on the Poseidon, they dont come enviro sealed. Zeagles or Apeks will for the "higher end" models. Personally I think either one of those choices is a great way to go. What brands do your local shops deal with?

I like Posiden....probally because that what I have. I always hear ppl crying about how much they cost, how hard service is blah blah blah. SCUBA is far from a cheap sport, take care of your gear and I belive it will take care of you. Either way you go I'm sure you'll be happy

I agree with you Chad, they are great regs. I'm just speaking from personal experience that they are substantially more expensive to service (around here at least) than most regs. Just wanted to make sure the OP realized that so he could make an informed decision, that's all.

P.S. is there a lot of diving in Colorado?

Jim

Oh no man I hear ya. I can only think of 2 LDS around here that even carry them. I mean think of a shop trying to outfit their staff in them just so they can push the reg, and have them on the shelf too....unheard of around here. Anyways one of the guys I dive with is a rep and services them, so I guess that makes me lucky.

Diving around here is pretty pointless unfortunatly, everybody drives 380 miles to Blue Hole or Rock Lake in NM. I've done alot of diving in Cherry Creek lake but its only for friends sunglasses and keys since we've been slipping our boat out there the past couple of years. This year I'm gonna give Horsetooth and Carter another shot (about 70 miles away) So too make a long story short.....I'd probally sell my soul to live in the FL Keys. Take it easy.

Well Chad, if you ever find yourself up around Lake Erie, let me know. I work for a shop that runs a charter op in the lake. I'm sure we can find some good dives for you.

Jim

I think the apeks xtx200 is a really wicked reg, I have been using it for really cold dives the water has been about -10 and it works so good, it does not freeze up, it breathes like a dream. I love it, infact im buying another one for my twin setup.
