I'm well aware that the Taxi union will not allow them to pick up at the airport, but many people say they walk a block or two from the terminal to grab one. We usually just walk across the street to Smart to rent a VW, or get picked up at the airport by someone working for one of the other car rental places. We're staying near town at Casa Mexicana for a change so we don't plan to rent a VW for the full week. We're perfectly willing to walk a couple blocks to grab a taxi to save $15 or $20 over taking a packed van, and possibly save a few stops along the way. Does anyone who does this have any suggestions on where is the closest place taxis will pick up? :idk:

Last June as we were rolling our bags off airport property a taxi leaving the airport asked us if we needed a ride. He picked us up just across the street and we were heading towards our hotel before we could have been in a full van.

The year before it took a bit longer, maybe a couple of minutes to flag down a taxi.

Thanks! I guess it all depends on luck if you'll find one to pick you up before getting too far from the terminal. I think it's worth a try. Worst case, we walk a block or two and have to turn around and walk back to grab a van.

Never had to do that in 10 years now. There are always taxis around the airport and they'll see you walking towards the circle. By the time you get there they'll be waiting with the trunk open...

Glad to hear it!

It is an easy walk along the sidewalk to the main road if you have wheels on your luggage. It is about a quarter mile to the circle. There any taxi will hail you. Ours wanted us to walk across the street to be legal for pick up. Fare to Chedraui area was 60 pesos for two people.

If you are staying at Casa Mexicana it will be $5 per person and you will almost certainly be the first person dropped off. Done it several times now. Usually in the hotel within 10-15 mins of leaving the glass doors :)

The cab drivers are aware that people will be walking off the airport grounds. They make regular trips around the perimeter. Ten minutes is the very longest I have ever had to wait.
Enjoy Cozumel

Can someone explain why the "TAXI" union won't allow their own "TAXIs" to pick up customers at the airport, but still allow them to be dropped off at the airport.
Why would they be so customer-UNfriendly & force them to be jammed into a big van & wait for it to be filled up before leaving.
