Here's yet another cheap idea.
Find a rope, a mat, and a handy tree. Wrap the mat around the tree to protect the trunk and wrap the rope around the tree several times. Then, wrap the rope around the tank several times. If you have a handy trailer hitch you can use that instead of a tree. You can get a LOT of torque without anything slipping and it won't mark the tank. I use this to valve and devalve my storage bottles, but rarely need to use it for a scuba tank.

Hi Sam, glad we were able to chat on the phone today! Always good to catch up and use each other as a sounding board for all the things life throws at us and remembering all the fun times we had together over the years (and continue having).
