I had my tank checked and vis'ed last April (2010) and then blew out my bicep tendon in May and didn't dive at all last year. Since I never used my tank, do I still need to have it inspected and VIS'ed again?

Thanks,

Jeff

You can still use the air currently in the tank, but you will need a viz to get it refilled (unless you have your own fill station). If it's been 5 years since the last hydro test it will need one of those too.

I was also wondering about this issue...
Last month i picked up one Al80 and one HP130 from my LDS. As i was paying, an employee took off the old visual sticker and put a new one without doing a VIP. He told me that it was never opened since the initial VIP so it is ok to do so

Should i be worried?

If you think about it, if anything (like water) got into the tank with the last fill, corrosion can be going on the whole time the tank is sitting, even if it isn't used. Since corrosion is a safety issue, I think it's well within the rights of the shop that is filling your tanks to insist on having the tank reinspected.

This is not an ideal practice since most water contaminated tanks get that water in them via the fill station not by being used underwater. So its remotely possible the first fill put water in there. But even if they opened it, VIPed it and then filled it fresh for you the same issue would apply.

They really just wanted you to have a fresh 1yr for your new tank. Its fine.

Perhaps, as the above two posts note. However, the person who should really worry is the shop owner. Say there was something funny with the gas in the cylinder and it caused problems - the shop could be liable. If I was the owner that employee would be having a nice long chat with me.
