Is there a way to look at the tank stamp and determine the manufacturer? I read a thread recently that mentioned an SP number or Exception number? Is there a list of these somewhere that is publicly accessible?

What is it you actually want to know: Mfg? Meaning of the codes? What are the different exemptions?

You might want to just post the number from the tank.....there are lots of variations that are too hard to explain.

This is the reason I was asking if there's just a reference somewhere. That way I could just look it up when I have the tanks on hand again...

The manufacturer is ambiguous at this point. I think they are Sherwoods, but I haven't been able to confirm that for sure.

I'll try my question again: what is it you actually want to know?

Perhaps the first sentence of my first post and the last sentence of my second post were unclear? I want to confirm who manufactured the tanks.

You asked more than this in your first post, and then went off on exemptions.

The mfg will be stamped into the metal of the tank, either by a name or by a code or a special symbol, such as M4002=Catalina, M8303=Faber, M7901= Asahi, and PST=Pressed Steel Tank. The PSTs also show an E9791 special exemption for the high density steel they were using. I think PST made all the Sherwood tanks, under the name Sherwood Genesis; this lasted from 1987 to 1997. The PST exemption runs out January 31, 2015, so if they don't renew it then the tanks are no longer "legal" in less than 12 months.

Asahi made some of the Genesis tanks for at least a little while. A friend of mine has a 104 of theirs, its an odd size for a HP tank.

tank i.d. is easy: it's the tall round heavy thing with the air inside!

Herman recently posted a good tank marking explanation. So you could search for that, it wasn't that long ago. There's also a chapter in the excellent Vance Harlow book on regulator repair that explains tank markings. You'll have to buy that, though. It's worth it!
