ICC 3aa 2250 Serial # K17426 11(hydro stamp) 65+.

ICC = likely the manufacturer.
3aa = alloy type. steel.
2250 = psi. 2250 psi
Serial # K17426 - self explainatory.
11(hydro stamp) 65+. = date/year. November 1965. the plus indicates you can overfill it 10%

I would guess that it's a steel 72. (but didn't see that info on there).

EDIT:
If you had included the EBAY link that you cut-n-pasted this above stamp info from, it might help identifying it... :shakehead:

here's some pics of the tank for others to see.

ICC = Interstate Commerce Commission

At the time this tank was manufactured the federal authority having juristiction was the Interstate Commerce Commission. The ICC has since been replaced by the Department of Transportation. Newer tanks are stamped with the letters, DOT.

Yes, the tank is probably a 72 and yes, it holds about 65 cf at rated pressure. A steel 72 holds approximately 71.2 cf at 2475 psi (10% overfill). At the rated pressure of 2250 psi it will hold 64.7 cf.

Do not confuse the 11-65+ with the cubic feet. That is the date the tank was made and tested for the first time.

11 - month of November, 65 -year of 1965, + qualifies for 10% overfill, 2250 psi X 10%= 225 psi + 2250 psi = 2475 psi

I have two similar tanks with original hydros in 1970. Does anyone know what the REE is for these so that they can get a + rated hydro? I have done a bunch of digging on the board and the only info I have found is that they may have been made by PST for US Divers. Would the current PST company even still have records from almost 40 years ago??

This has all the answers

3AA 2250 (LP 72) tanks were made by PST, Norris, Walter Kidde, and I think Farber. I can't see the manufacturer's mark on this one, but it kind of looks like a K in a circle right there in the original hydro mark. If so, it's a kidde, but it could be my imagination. Someone else will know.

It looks like a nice tank. Before buying, I'd want to see a photo of the bottom without the boot on, even though it's galvanized. If the seller is a genius with a camera, it would be great to see what it looks like inside. Good luck on that one!

Thanks. I am not sure how I missed this thread. So am I to understand that the 3AA2250 tanks were made by Norris and not PST? If so I will also be anxiously waiting to see if the guy from CTC can hunt those down. Thanks again for your help.:lotsalove:

They were made by both and a few others as mattboy has said. The Norris tanks usually have a symbol of an N inside a diamond. I have 10 steel 72's predominately Norris with a few PST's. I don't know which manufacturer is most common.

I have found that a lot of the US Divers tanks do not have the original manufacturers name. But you can figure it out by the original hydro stamp. Lets look at the photos above, there is a large C with a L inside of it between the month and year of the original hydro. This is the symbol for Cochran Labs.

Per the CTC web site CTC Seminars Home Page
down load the page on tank symbols : http://www.ctcseminars.com/Files/Technical/DOT MFG IIA.pdf

Cochran did hydros for Pressed Steel, Marison Co, and Creamery Package. Of these I only know of Pressed Steel making the SCUBA 72 tank.

So, you most likely have a Pressed Steel tank, if so the REE number is 58.4
