Can a company like air gas or other welding supplier hydro scuba tanks? I don't have an LDS near me, but I'm pretty sure the staff in a welding shop couldn't answer my question. I know that welding have to inspected and hydroded but don't know if tis the same process

Possibly, here's a list of authorized hydrotesters by state. FYI "low pressure" does not mean LP scuba tanks, it means propane tanks and fire extinguishers. As far as DOT is concerned all scuba tanks are high pressure. Be aware that if you take exemption tanks to an inexperienced hydrotester not familiar with the "roundout" procedure they require they will fail and you will have zero recourse. So maybe ask the local scuba shop to start, they might save you a lot of grief.

The first time I had tanks due for hydro, I was nowhere near my home town. Not sure what to do, I went to google and looked for people who hydroed tanks. I found a place that did nothing else, right near where I was staying. It was cheap and easy.

I had mine hydroed last time by one of our welding gas stores. They picked them up and brought them back.

I take my tanks to a fire extingusher shop that does both aluminum and steel. They VIP, hydro and eddy test for 35 bucks - aluminum.... 25 for steel.

Actually on this subject--I meant to ask you guys. Where are you and how often are you required to do a visual and a hydro in your country?
here in unzud (new Zealand) its visual after one one year hydro after two .

DOT for SCUBA, hydro 5 years aluminum and steel. NO VIS required between hydro. Dive shops and Service shops "want" a VIS before filling usually. I fill my tanks and do my inspections, so I bypass that crap.

I think pushing a tank to 5/3 pressure every year over works the material.

OkByMe, agree. The standard was set by a committee which had an overall vested interest in having tests done as often as possible. Absolutely no risk assessment was done on what was required for safety purposes. That is one of the reason why I have my own compressor, I just make sure I have two tanks in test at any one time (for my wife and I) so that if we travel to another location, we have one tank each (since the shops invariably provide the second tank of the day).
