Suunto D9 - is it worth it?

I am a newbie to dive computers.

how can it work without a hose attached to it? How can it tell how much air u have consumed?

There is a transmistter that screws into your 1st stage. That transmitter measures the tank pressure and sends it to your watch.

Your right it's about a $700.00 diffrence. No wireless transmission, 2 gases instead of 3 and max depth of 150 meters appose to 190 meters. The D6 has a cool little dive graph though. The more important part here is once again the D6 here on Okinawa is $580.00 and the D9 w/Transmittor is like $1300.00.

I'm getting the Atom 2.0, despite my earlier point about avoiding brand new models. Though, I think the point of the Atom 2.0 might be to fix the bugs from the first model. We'll see what happens, hopefully I won't have a horror story to report

Basically, this is a good looking watch and has some reverse snob appeal for sure. (as opposed to say, a gold Rolex) AND even though I don't want air integrated, I like the Stinger because the profile is conservative enough for me and it does not alarm for every little thing, just the important stuff. I like having an alarm to set sleeping in airports, etc. Just take it off if you have to freedive for the buoy or your second dive profile will get messed up. Check e-bay! I am looking for the titanium band for my Stinger and I saw some amazing prices, yesterday. Not logging but having the profiles of all your dives is so nice. I don't upload but people like that too. here, there is a guy who sells trans -shipped Stingers for 330 (Stainless) but my BF just gave me the Titanium because we had a thread here "gear I want but cannot afford" and I said I wanted the Titanium because it is really light! So...now I will give him my Stainless Stinger and pray the Swedish DM's don't spot him.


I bet you can find it for 1000.

Im some what new to the diving world...The Suunto D9 is a small yet loaded piece of diving equiptment, is it worth 1500 dollars.

Depends on what you value and your free cash....

Personally I had to smile at the discussion on the thread. I'm Scottish by origin and an engineer by occupation. Back there in sunny Scotland we have a saying "Anybody can make for $100 what an engineer can make for $10".

Now we aren't making anything here but what we are buying functionality, in particular NDL information, depth, dive logging and tank pressure. Now from a purely engineering viewpoint the D9 is as big a waste of resources as say a Rolex watch. In both cases you can get the same functionality for a lot less money.

Now of course impressing people is a different matter entirely But IMO impressing people is like being handcuffed to a dead Zebra. It's interesting at the beginning but it gets old really fast.


Just for fun I decided to total up my spending on scuba gear to date. Given my wife imposed spending limits I think I did pretty well. I completely equipped myself with mostly new gear for diving the Pacific NW for considerably less than the MSRP of the D9. That includes such quality items as a Bare Trilam drysuit, HP 80 steel tank Apollo Biofins and a Diverite Traspac II with Rec wing.

My focus is on safety and comfort. To me these are determined mainly by your exposure protection, BC, fins and other essentials. The dive computer is of secondary importance.

I bought my D9 mid last year for slightly under US$1000 in Malaysia. This is with the transmitter.

I agree with some folks that its convenient to have a dive watch and comp whilst on diving holidays. Saves the hassle of bringing two watches on a trip.

The transmitter has not failed me yet, been giving very consistant readings compared to my analog SPG.
