so.... is it worth the extra bucks? i mean.. right now.. i have analog spg and depth guage.

wacha think?

Do you mean is a dive computer worth it, or is the air integrated wireless feature worth it?

I do feel that a dive computer is a good thing to have (it sounds like you are saying that you don't have one, right?). I don't know if your dives are limited by gas consumption or by non-deco limits, but a computer will give you longer dives as compared to just assuming a square profile for planning purposes. Also, it lets you download data if you like doing that sort of thing! They have gotten pretty cheap ...

As far as the air integrated wireless computers, I only use mine as I said before for logging SAC rates, etc.. I don't use it in place of an SPG, but many people do, I suppose. If you do that, and rely on it, it is nice to have all your data in one place on your wrist.

doctormike.

I already have the Suunto D4i. did 2 dives with it. and love it! at present setup. I have an spg and depth guage in a console hanging on my left hip. I just look to my left hip to read the guages.

As of the present. IM still doing recreational dives.. start the dive hitting 80-70ft... then usually stick to 60 ft... sometimes go down to see some stuff then go back to 60ft. I haven't tried doing a deco dive. (not yet for now) but i usually end my dive with 500psi. that could range from 50mins to an hour..

I just thought if the air transmitter is reliable enough and accurate enough to have all data on the wrist. well.. if it does stop transmitting, i can always look down at my spg. I just hope the transmitter is that accurate. i mean... it could say 1000 psi on my dive comp... but unknowingly.. spg might be reading 500 psi =0

Got it... sorry! I was lazy and didn't scroll back to your original post..... :D

In my experience, the wireless system gives you a slightly lower reading for air pressure than the SPG at the beginning of the dive, and I'm assuming that the SPG is the correct reading. I wouldn't worry about it giving you a false sense of more gas than you have. The main failure seems to be occasional breakage of the wireless link, which so far seems to reset itself pretty well.

So let's see what you would get for the extra $:

1) Gas consumption data in your computer, and therefore in your log if you download dives.

2) Ability to ditch the SPG and be a bit more streamlined. I don't do this, as I mentioned. Certainly the brass and glass SPG is standard issue in the DIR crowd, and they are all about the streamlining!

3) Convenience of not having to look at your SPG, since you have all of your data on your wrist.

In my experience, as divers progress, they look at their gas less and less. Of course, you need to know how much you have for gas planning, etc.. but as people get to know their consumption rates, they might just look a few times during the dive. Therefore, the added benefit of not having to look at your SPG on your hip becomes less and less of an issue. As I said, I never look at the pressure reading on my writs at all any more, I just glance at the SPG a couple of times during the dive.

doctormike,

so basically it's not so much a bother if it looses contact. it just reconects. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/More Smiles/eyebrow.gif

1.) Gas consumption in my computer. sounds good. I haven't really bought the interface for my computer. I use a mac. some how.... i find that there are only a few dive software that runs on mac. already posted the Question to suunto and they said they'll have a running software at the end of year which is great... but ... end of the year.http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/icons/icon_cry.gif

2.) Naaah. there's no way im ditching the SPG and the Depth guage on my Hip. I believe in redundancy. I just feel im doing less movement by checking the pressure on my wrist rather than break my form to look at my hip

3.) I dive with my own gear. I find it a must when you go more than 20 feet deep. I don't wana bet my life on rentals when you're 60ft deep http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/More Smiles/nonononono.gif
but there are times when tanks have faulty valves or o-rings.. I always check my air every 10mins or less http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/Standard Smiles/04.gif

thanks for the info Doctormike, I think i'll get one before December http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/More Smiles/eyebrow.gif

That was my experience. Your mileage may vary...

It's 2011. Everyone I know runs a Mac these days. Do they even make PCs any more?

Use this: http://www.mac-dive.com

Awesome software, terrific support, fantastic iPhone integration, etc...

You can ditch the console depth gauge, just keep a nice, clean, unobtrusive SPG on your hip. Depth gauge on your wrist, much easier for something that you will refer to more frequently.

Sure, check as often as you like! Happy diving...
