You can cut SS but I would think if you use a SS plate just getting a thicker plate would be easiest.
Thicker plate is not as flexible.
When I used to dive backmount I used a plate only with 15l, for 50% of the year for wetsuit fresh water diving, and then at first added 4kg for salt water, and then an additonal 1k for freshwater drysuit,
If I had a thicker plate, I'd be too negative 50% of my dives.

Still, a 6 mm steel plate is not exactly great for (lightweight) travel. I think that is what @drakcheslav is talking about. Also, going to the original OP, another backplate seems not to be the answer...

I'm working on this one

Do you like it

I like this

but you can get much more better bits separately

I'd just bolt a couple 3/8 inch SS plates to your plate.

Clamp the steel plates to the plate allowing them to overhang the edge a hair.
Drill though in 4 spots.
Thread the weights and the plate.
Bolt down, paint edge of bolt.
Remove bolt, spin on nut, cut bolt to exact length. Remove nut, reinstall.
Drag edge of plate across a grinder for a smooth flush fit.

In one evenings time you have a custom setup that'll be cool for life.

Personally, I wouldn't bolt on the weights. I'd countersink the holes a little on the plate and weights, then hammer in a brass rod, and the hammer the rod with a punch to mushroom it. Permanently riveted, like a knife handle.

Yup, if you want a permanent fixture, sure. Not sure if that's what the OP wants, though...

I like the Zeagle weight pockets, which attach to my BP.

That is a really good idea, easy to take off and on as well.

We use these on all of our BP/W except the zen ghost where they don't fit....We have those on 2 HOG's, DIveRite and xDeep Zen
