I didn't think the Navy wanted combatant ships in the reef programs?

JMdiver:
Thanks for that release jvdk01 and it would be great if we could get one of those ships but as I said earlier CS2R are working with all of Ca. so who ever is ready to sink a ship in their area when the ship is ready for sinking gets that ship. So we have to be ready when it is or we lose out until the next one.

John

I agree. We are working on standing up a chapter of CS2R in Ventura county. As I live 10 minutes from both Ventura and Oxnard harbors, it is my completely unbiased opinion that near the Channel Islands would be the ideal place to sink a ship. The Channel Islands are already a great dive destination and the area already has a good infrastructure between Ventura, Oxnard and Santa Barbara to accommodate the increase in divers the wreck would create. Like I said, I'm completely unbiased. Unfortunately we are behind as we haven't even gotten our chapter started yet. Next month we are having a representative from CS2R come and give a talk on what we need to do. I believe our meetings will be the first Monday of each month. We are putting a flyer together which should be done in the next few days. When it is, I will put it here for anyone interested in attending. Like I said, I believe Ventura county is the best place to sink a ship, but wherever they put it, it will be good for all of California.

I'm thinking the Oriskany qualifies as a combatant.;)

They were talking about putting it somewhere in Santa Monica Bay so it's a short trip like the ones down in SD.

There are goups up north that are trying to get one as well.

I live in Ventura County also, so that would be great if it was off the Channek Islands, althoguh I would want to be careful that the islands dont end up getting over-dove. They need to stay as presitne as possible. :)

Because primarily of safety problems, the sub has been taken off the table. However, two more vessels have been offered up. Here is a link to a press release that went our earlier this week.

Where and when is still VERY MUCH in the works....

You're right I forgot about that one.

Do you have another link the press release, by any chance? When I try and open the PDF on the "Read More" page for the ships, I get a 404 error.

Everyboby in the dive community should be at this meeting especially those of you living in S.Ca. Think how great it would be to have our own wreck in the L.A. area.

Happy Wreck Diving
John
Hi John,

I don't recall seeing you at the meeting referred to where we discussed the USS Sailfish. In the meantime, we're making excellent progress toward obtaining two major combat vessels larger than the Spiegel Grove. It's a big program and we could use all the help you'd like to give. If you would like to be brought up to date on the ships-to-reefs activities in California, reply and I will invite you to an On-Line Webinar to be held on March 1st at 7 p.m.
