I’m replacing my regulator and I’m trying to determine how to configure the hoses for my primary and backup. My current configuration is a short hose to the backup that attaches to a neck yoke and a longer hose for the primary that goes under the arm and up to an “L” shaped fitting. It’s worked well for several hundred dives other than the fitting getting the hose a little twisted occasionally but I’ve never used anything else and I’ve never seen another diver with the same configuration. Is there any consensus on the best configuration?

Pretty common. I use that configuration often. What do you want to accomplish that the way you do it now does not suit?

Only issue I’ve had is the hose gets a bit twisted. I was thinking a straight fitting would be less likely to do that but like I said, this is the only configuration I’ve ever used.

I am not sure what is meant by the twisted hose but maybe then go to a 5 feet long hose for the primary and wrap it and remove the 90 degree swivel fitting. I go back and forth between the two. I eventually get annoyed with the 40 inches hose under my arm primary and switch to a 60 inches (5 feet) hose. Then when I get sufficinetly annoyed with that switch back to the 40 inches hose. I usually carry both so I can get annoyed all I want to.

Maybe get 50 inch hose as a compromise.😆

The 5 ft hose works well in my experience, routed under the right arm, up on the left, and behind the neck. Stays pretty tight to the torso. I've not done the 40" approach, but I would think the jaw stress would be less with the 5 ft since the hose weight is well supported by the back of the neck.

I tried it and 5' is several inches too short for my wide and thick torso. At some point I may get a custom 66" hose, but until then the streamlined works fine.

I am liking a 47"/120cm hose underarm with 90 swivel elbow better than the other options mentioned above. BUT, I do what @Nemrod does, switch things around every now and then just for the heck of it 😁
