Thanks to good weather and great teamwork, the principal wrecks of the Straits of Mackinac were all buoyed over the Memorial Day weekend by volunteers working with the Straits of Mackinac Preserve Committe.

The Eber Ward and the Cedarville are each buoyed bow and stern, and we have single moorings on the Barnum, Stalker, Young, Minneapolis, Sandusky, Maitland, and Northwest. We hope to mark the McBrier and the Col. Ellsworth in the near future, and have discussed putting small lines on a few shallow wrecks such as those near Pt. Nipigon or Gros Cap.

When tying off to these moorings, please consider using a line through the eye of the tagline rigged as bridle to give more scope, and to reduce wear on our taglines. Also, please no stern-to moorings except in flat calm weather. These precautions should help extend the life of the mooring equipment.

Please help to support our mooring efforts by attending the annual Jim Montcalm Memorial Treasure Hunt in St. Ignace, this year to be held August 9. Information will be mailed out to past participants soon, or you can contact the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce at 906-643-8717.

See you on the water!

Can't wait to dive the Straits again! Is Straits Scuba open for business yet?
Larry M. should be up there most weekends.

The Straits Preserve would like to give a special thank you to Joylyne S., Tim B., Fred S., Morris L., Mike C., and Rich J. for all the extra help mooring the wrecks last weekend. You guys made it look easy and kept it safe. Many thanks.

Thanks to all involved in putting the moorings out. Hope to get up there soon!

Another year of thank you's to Straits Scuba and the volunteers. You make diving there an excellent experience. Of course the bouy's are all placed in Menominee also, so if anyone wants to dive the dark crappy waters around here, you're good to go!!! (M&M Diving) Coming to see you guys is our equivalent of going to the Bahamas..... We got a new boat this year so no worries about the 17' open bow sinking in the 6 foot waves... (and you won't have to look at us like we're insane when we ask to tie up!!) GRIN!!! Thanks again everyone!

that's great. Hope to get over there this year.

Side note: We put buoys on the McBriar (wood stmr.) and Col. Ellsworth (schooner) yesterday. We also re-buoyed the stern of the Cedarville. Thanks dab, divbum, Tim and Bob.

Interesting day, in that the seas were calm and skies partly cloudy (ideal) in the Straits, but we could see dark, ominous rain clouds over the UP and LP. At the end of the day, we raised a glass of Oberon to Mother Nature.

We're hoping to complete the alternate mooring on the Sandusky. It will be about 15' off the port quarter/stern. We'll tie a small line from the mooring line to the wreck, but the wreck should be obvious to observant divers. Our goal is to reduce the direct impact and deterioration of this beautiful wreck.

Enjoy and be safe. Hope to see some of you at the Treasure Hunt.
