I'm sure that's the cause in some cases but I've seen many that have no visible damage to knob which is especially noticeable with the plastic knobs. I'll assume both.

I had that look until I found a pistol grip that fits on a spray paint can so my fingers are out of the spray.

If you can find one, they are worth the cash.
