Status of Left Lean and Right Rich Philosophy in B/M Open Circuit Technical Diving

Who still uses (and teaches) Left Lean / Right Rich deco gas cylinder gas placement in O/C?

  • Heck no, I don't prescribe to that antiquated, inappropriate system.

  • I was just recently taught that way.

  • I've been diving that way for years and I am not dead yet.

  • I've not only successfully dived that way for years I teach it!

For AN/DP I was taught to put the deco bottle(s) on the left, I don't remember if the materials discussed it at all.

The TDI Trimix course teaches lean left/rich right as a good option and, other than mentioning that you should be careful to not trap your long hose, it mentions benefits over putting all bottles on the left but no cons (definitely seems to promote that technique for attaching bottles in my opinion). I've only done the e-learning so far, but from my conversations I believe the standard method my instructor teaches is to put all on the left.
What benefits does it list? Just curious.

Antiquated and unappropriated?
Say who?

Have been diving that way since qualified as Tec diver 1998.
Goes against every fibre of the beliefs of Hogarthian activists :)
You must have died many times by not diving as they prescribe, all left or hanging off a leash...

I am pretty sure there are plenty who do not dive that way and still alive and kicking.

Interview with Bill "Hogarth" Main

Good read

NO isolation valve!!!!!!

no isolation valve, inflator off the left post, and wetsuit is a far cry from bottles on the right which inhibit the ability to easily donate the long hose

I was taught it as part of my AN/Helitrox, but I follow the DIR practice of always breathing bottles from the left, since it can be difficult to fit more than one bottle in sidemount I do sometimes mount a bottle on the right hand side. But that is a storage location only.

What benefits does it list? Just curious.

Helps to reduce likelihood of switching to the wrong deco cylinder at the wrong time, makes it easier for buddies to confirm that you're on the right cylinder, and helps standardize procedures across team members (not sure I can find a rationale to agree with that, but it says it).

Would be nice if you changed the poll to allow viewing results without voting for those of us who must abstain. Otherwise you're getting at lest some pencil whipped answers.
