I am not a fan of the "half minus 200 (or plus 200)" approach alluded to in the beginning of this thread, there is an assumption that is implicit here which I don't think leads to conservative gas management.
Care to elaborate on this? Myself and most of the guys I dive with use this method, and in my (our) opinion, it is more than conservative enough for the types of dives that we do. I'm curious as to what you are seeing as the downside.

In your case the 1/2+ 200 is conservative because as many DIRs,you don't use the back gas. If are using 1/3 of the backgas,then it is simpler to use 1/3 of the stage.
 
In short, whether a particular approach to gas management is optimum or not changes with the environment you are in.

Very true. The only deco dives I do are all overhead, whether in a cave or in a wreck. When the only ceiling is a deco ceiling, then the approach can change.

As for getting out the water faster...if the water is that cold, you likely won't see me in it... :D
