So I noticed on my last dive that when I inhale from my regulator (shallowly breathing)it makes a high pitched squeaking noise, not when I exhale. However If I exhale at a normal breathing rate on land it makes a lower pitched "squeaking/ Grogy sound"

Does any one know what this could be?I've only used the reg. on 2 lake dives. Does it just need to be broken in? or what. Im going to the keys at the end of march for a week so I need to know!

Thanks,
Mike

A whistle from a BP 1st on inhale is a fairly common indication of the HP o-ring needing more lube.

what lube do you recommend?

Hi mjb94,

1.) Can you tell if the sound is coming from the 1st or 2nd stage? Sometimes it can be a little hard to tell underwater, but if it is making noise on land as well you should be able to tell which stage the sound is coming from.

2.) What make and model regulator are you using?

With the answers to to those questions, some of the "guru's" on this board should have the best shot at answering your questions (awap is one of the gurus, I am not :D ).

Best wishes.

Here's the reg ( i guess im not allowed to post links) heres the name Tusa Platina Regulator, Black (RS-110)

Im 99% sure its coming from the second stage.

IDK if this matters, If I take real deep breaths it does go away it only does it under normal breathing.

This kind of sounds like a second stage (diaphragm, exhaust valve) issue, doesn't it? Is the reg breathing wet when it's making these noises underwater?

Breathing Wet as in is it sucking in water?

Yes...and specifically when it's making the weird sounds.

FYI, upon inhalation, the diaphragm is sucked inward, depressing the lever which starts the flow of air. The exhaust valve is supposed to seal the second stage when you inhale...and then allow air to exit when you exhale. If water were getting into the reg upon inhalation, then those two things should be checked.

If water is flowing into the second stage regardless of the phase of the breathing cycle (inhalation vs. exhalation), then it could be a crack in the housing or perhaps an o-ring isn't sealing the second stage properly. It could also be several other things.

I should have asked the two following questions also:
Does the work of breathing increase (feel resistance) during inhalation?
Is there any air escaping from the second stage during inhalation? (Easier for your buddy to tell you if this is the case.)
