I find it also depends on how you wind it up. If one side is higher then the other side it still works, you just clip of on the low side of holes.

A small note about "full" spools. They're difficult to thread the loop through as the string covers over the holes in the spool. You can use more expensive spools, such as Apeks, which use thinner string and have more space. Alternatively you can wind the string on over to one side, leaving more space on one side of the spool for threading.
 
It seems like a lot of over-engineering.

That works as well but take a look how the line is secured to the double ender in the video, it makes a big difference.
Yeah looks to complicated for 5mm gloves,

If my bolt snap comes off the reel,
My 2 wraps on the snap, easily holds it and keeps it from unspooling,

Just what I do and seems to work well.
