I use a large (ratcheting) reel and a stiff dynema line when deploying an smb from depths below 150 feet. Because of the current, I think I probably release over 300 ft of line, although I have never actually measured it.
I usually just let all the line out and then start reeling it in when I get much shallower and the current differential is decreased between the surface and the deeper layers of water.
The line I use is extremely strong (like 600 lb) is stiff (so it does not tangle easily) and is very tough and abrasion resistant. It has a stiff outer jacket- I think the od is 1.9 mm. Very different from nylon string.
It is typically used for kite surfing or for spearfishing applications. I also use it to tow a dive float when drift diving and it has taken significant abuse as it has contacted the reef and wrecks, from time to time.
