I picked up David Attenborough's "Life in the underbrush" at the library yesterday. In it, it talks about horseshoe crabs.

Horseshoe crabs come on land to breed and lay eggs. This is a remnant behavior, as when they first started laying eggs there no other animals lived on land.

Wow. That immediately conjurned up images of primeval seas and barren, brown rocky landscapes for me.
