hi, my name is Zack... (crowd: Hi Zack) and I am a newbie diver.

thats right- admittance is the first step. now i have a question that might seem really stupid to all of you but i need it answered so i can sound cool like the rest of you divaholics. (laugh)

What the hell is DIR/Do It Right?

Everyone will tell you to do a search of the board for answers, but sometimes its hard to get an answer out of all that, so here:

Its a holistic approach to scuba diving that encompasses safety, training, gear configuration, and fitness.

You can go to www.gue.com and read about it there.

Also there is a book, Doing it Right, the Fundamentals of Better diving. by Jarrod Jablonski.

ok ok that article was really helpful....

so is all of this stuff (i dont know wheather to call it DIR or GUE) taught in courses or what?

GUE is the agency..Global Underwater Explorers

They teach a DIR fundamentals course, you have to take it to take any other classes with them which consists of cave and technical courses, all of which are taught to be DIR.

Zack, this is my view, I may be corrected by others. GUE is an offshoot of some real serious cave exploration diving in Florida. The people who ran the project realized that there were issues with traditional dive agencies. They, GUE, go for a certain common equipment set-up and a "holistic" approach, whatever the heck "holistic" really means.

Some people love the DIR way, others hate it, some are in the middle.

Decide for yourself, enjoy and be safe.

If I understand it correctly, the word holistic is intended to mean that DIR is about a complete diving system, including gear, attitude, training, fitness, team diving, and possibly more that I haven't caught.

While I myself don't embrace DIR, I would say that their gear configuration is very well thought out, and I have picked up several things from that. If you are interested, check it out.
