Plus one for Blue Wilderness and Kahala Divers is a favorite both will usually have less divers onboard and most likely be the only dive boat in the area. Most of the boats out of Kona are good but they will be busy and several boats will be at each site. I second what RVBldr says about diving in Hawaii, it's not the Caribbean but the more you look the more you will see. Slow down and enjoy.

Blue Wilderness: Small boat, great crew up the Kohala coast. Worth the drive to avoid crowds.

I just dove with them last week for morning dives, and then a night Manta dive. We had 2 mantas with us, gave us plenty of action. I suppose I would love to see 20, but not sure how that works. Do they line up and keep circling you? With the Manta dive, you're just dropping to the bottom next to their lights and letting them cruise by you.

Do they take you near Kona or closer to Kohala?

Kohala, which is close to where they launch. If you're not staying north of the airport, it's a longer drive, but probably worth it, as there are less dive boats up north clogging up dive sites
