Help me with the tally guys!

Mo2, how did you come up with that signature ??? :)

As to the moon walk, not a good thing to try with students on their first ow dive...

Only did two dives today at Casino Point but the vis had improved slightly and surge was dying down... just in time fir good conditions next weekend while we're all at the show. Well, all except SAF_25 who will be diving the Park Sunday. If I decide to do only one day at the show, I'll be in the Park Sunday too.

Otter and SAF_25- the schools of dolphin at about 2 miles out can be pretty impressive. Even more impressive is the fact that I've seen them IN the Dive Park twice this year. First time I remember seeing that.

Otter- friends have been seeing a number of small Molas at other dive sites around the island the past month or so. I haven't been so fortunate, but I used to see them fairly frequently much earlier out here. One did see a Mola at the outer edge of the dive park recently.

Arnaud- can't help you with the tally since the number exceeds the fingers on my two hands. I guess I could take off my socks though!

Best fishes all,

Dr. Bill

We are in Oxnard and started diving in 79 in Laguna. Just found this site and really enjoy it.

We were at Santa Cruz (Pelican and Fry's) last week and saw more Mola Mola than we have ever seen. Wonder why?

Another SoCal resident/diver for the count.

Went out to Anacapa this weekend. The vis was pretty good, 40' in spots. Saw 2 Mola Mola and a Giant Black Sea Bass that was about 6'-7' in length. Swam right past us while on our safety stop. The lingcod was very proliferous and large as well.

Made 3 dives on this beautiful sunny day after being out dry for almost a month.

Dr. Bill, please keep those socks on. Please. :)

counting Otter, aka the Thread Hijacker

Well I was almost successful! Actually a good count would be interesting, sorry about almost taking us off course. That being said....

DrBill, is seeing Mola Molas at depths abound 100 fsw unusual? Also, short of being independently wealthy (which my wife kids are doing their best to ensure that doesn't happen anytime soon), how do I get to live on Catalina and dive all week long with an intermittent trip around the world to dive..dive...dive?? Great website, I appreciate your warped sense of humor :shades:

Thought about PM'ing this response to Otter, but others may be interested.

Re: Molas at depth, they are being seen fairly frequently this spring at varying depths. I haven't been so luck and would love to get some footage of them.

Re: how I got to live on Catalina... I never had children. It was a conscious decision that may have saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars! Selfishly I use that "found money" to support my dive habit and teach others about the marine world.

I took a job out here fresh out of college teaching marine biology on SCUBA at a small prep school. Over the time I've been here I've had to take on many different kinds of work to support me- usually in the tourist industry. About 20 years ago I started consulting for the SCICo which owns 11% of the island, writing their tour manuals including all their marine tours. Their crew called me Dr. Bill so I thought I'd make it official and returned to grad school for my PhD. After several years as VP of the Conservancy (which owns 88% of the island) and teaching at UCSB, I decided to use part of my savings to pursue what I really love... diving and producing underwater videos.

Re: the extended dive vacation to SE Asia, Australia and the South Pacific (which is what others might be interested in), the entire 72-day trip cost me a mere $4,500. I bought my air tickets from Airbrokers Intl. (www.airbrokers.com) for $1,600 (excluding domestic Australian flights). The entire trip was on a backpacker's budget- staying in hostels, bungalows, etc. for the most part. Food was inexpensive, especially in Thailand. Such trips casn be done if one sacrifices tradition western comforts. You can even get around-the-world airfares of $1,000-2,300 from Airbrokers. No connection to them, just a satisfied customer.

I'm looking now to dive South America, then do a trip back to SE Asia, up to the Red Sea and then the Med (around the world!). Remember, we only go around once in life (unless reincarnation occurs). I sacrificed having a family for the freedom to experience other aspects of living. Not a choice everyone would make.

Re: my warped sense of humor, thank you very much!

Arnaud once bubbled...
Well, that's 6 so far... I know we're more than that.

Hi Arnaud,

Does it count if you make the trek to So Cal 1-3 weekends a month year round to dive off your coast ? :eek:ut:

Karen

Arnaud-

I think someone who dives here 1-3 weekends a month can be considered an adopted soCal diver. Why that's more than some who live here dive (except all of us fanatics on SB of course).
