I've seen Crescent Bay up to 40' vis, la Jolla up to around 35' (avg for these sites is about 5-15). Just wondering if there's anywhere in Socal that's reputed for it's consistently clear water? Also, do you guys recall any exceptional-vis-days at any particular sites you frequent?
To be honest, I haven't found any shore spots along the (continental) coast to have consistently clear water. Some spots will be decent one day (20'+) only to be crappy (<10') the next.
I've generally had better luck south (SD, Laguna) than north (Malibu).

Agreed, Laguna seems to have better vis than many other shore diving sites. That said, when the south swell is up (like now), I suspect the vis probably sucks there too!
I've had great vis (20ish feet) one day and pretty pathetic vis (5ish feet) a few days later. My only truly crappy vis (less than 2 feet) dives have been at White Point, Malaga, and Malibu.
Yep....as was said, vis is soooo come and go. Go to the one that 10 people said had great vis yesterday and you can easily end up in less than 10 ft of vis.
For overall good vis in So Cal, I've had up to about 60-70 feet at Ship Rock before. The Quarry site was also pretty good the few times I've done it. I've heard GREAT things about San Clemente and that's booked for next month. Fingers crossed. I've only done Anacapa once but had a good 40-50 feet in some spots.
Christmas Tree Cove in Palos Verdes Estates has the most consistant clear vis on the peninsula. It averages about ten feet more than other sites nearby. You pay for it with the hike and swim, but sometimes it's worth the effort.

2nd this. Christmas Tree Cove has the best visibility out of all the shore diving spots I've dove in So Cal. The trail can be a challenge for some and the couple hundred yard swim to the point can be a strain on the legs, but as reward divers can explore a series of pristine reef systems that rival many of our Channel Island dive sites. The sheer amount of life that can be found inhabiting these reefs are incredible. There aren't the huge variety of nudibranch's which can be found at nearby Long Point, but the bigger critters congregate here in higher numbers then elsewhere on the peninsula.
