Saw the coolest snorekel at my LDS today, Oceanic Pocket snorket. Little velcro disk that goes on your mask strap. When you need to whip out your snorkel, you whip it out and stick it to your mask strap so it doesn't flop when you swim.
I'm new too, so I'm not ready to "loose the snorkel". I NEVER use it but man, it'll sure be good to have it if I NEED it.................

Many people with long hair find that a regular "ponytail hair-tie" does a good job as a snorkel-keeper, and doesn't pull your hair any more than than it would if used on a ponytail.

Having said that, I really like the Oceanic clip mentioned by Debitthis.
Some clips that are open at the bottom have a tendancy to come off when doing a giant stride entry. Ask me how I know! I lost 2 that way.

Do not "lose the snorkel"; those who advocate that do not know how to dive...

Obviously you've never dived around Harbor Seals and Sea Lions. They have an affinity for pulling the snorkel, with mask attached, from your face and swimming away with both. A snorkel is an open invitation for such nefarious behavior, especially when the tip is a bright color.

I'm certain that there are a few marine mammals somewhere in Carmel/Monterey with quite a collection of masks and snorkels, probably wondering how to put them on, or willing to trade them for fish.

I use a pocket snorkel and we sell quick release clips that have a small button to push and off it comes to be stowed wherever. That said I usually leave it in the bag unless conditions dictate it's use. Waves, chop, possibility of long surface swim, etc.

What if instead of a snorkel, I strapped a stage bottle to the mask. I have another set of regs I could use on it. Then everyone would be happy, I quit the snorkel, and eveyrone would be happy, becuase I would name the stage bottle Mr. Snorkel. Everyone would be happy, I'd look stupid and my hair would probably be pulled by the ductape I used to hold a stage bottle to my head with.

I want a double-hose snorkel that you wear like a beanie... anyone have sewing and plastics molding skills? (It'd be quite entertaining, I think.)

They actually existed back in the day,.. well before my day,.. but I saw one at Diving World in Atlanta.
