Is a snorkel that think they made me put on my mask strap during OW training? I did not know it had a use....:D

I have two options that I use when I am out.

One: Get one of those neopreme snkorkel keepers about $2 at the dive shop.

Two: And my personal favorite ditch the snorkel and dive dive dive. One less thing to catch on wrecks and it makes for one less thing for those playfull sealions to "borrow".

If you don;t want to "loose the snorkel", you may want to consider a diving Beanie which is not as cumbersome or restrictive as a hood and will keep your hair out of trouble.
The beanie has a very somfortable neoprene strap that goes under your chin and then velcro to keep the strap in place. Bought it my LDS last year and wouldn't dive without it.
(Also works great to keep your hair out of your face)
Good luck, I hope that helps!)

Do not "lose the snorkel"; those who advocate that do not know how to dive. The only time that a snorkel should not be used is in an overhead dive. My daughter has long hair and simply braids it for diving.

Also, there are several attachment/quick release buckle systems to connect the snorkel to the mask that may make a difference. Here's a simple one: http://shop.divebooty.com/products/ms_oceanic-snorkeling_accessories.html

What about a river dive where wearing a snorkel will do nothing but ensure your mask will flood (or be pulled off)? What about when scootering, where the mask-ripping "current" is also present? What about when you're wearing a full-face mask? Reductio ad absurdum, perhaps, but to say that the only time a snorkel should not be used is in an overhead is demonstrably incorrect, and to say that those who advocate not diving a snorkel "do not know how to dive" is inciteful at best.

As for the hair-braiding thing, my hair is waist-length, and I braid it every time I go diving, swimming, hiking, or whatever. To not do so is to spend half an hour or more painfully untangling a bird's nest of epic proportions. Still, whether I braid or not has no bearing on a rubber snorkel keeper's ability to pull the hair on the side of my head, which seemed to be the problem here. I dive with a neoprene snorkel keeper, which eliminates the problem quite nicely.

That said, I also keep my snorkel in a pocket and not on my mask strap. If I need (or want) it, it's easy enough to attach, but if I'm not using it, it's out of my way. I've found that it can catch on other divers' gear (primarily the newbies who really *don't* know how to dive well and come around playing unintentional bumper-divers), the occasional overhead, and occasionally even my own gear. Even if I'm not expecting a big current, having a dangling snorkel could easily be as much a liability as not carrying a snorkel.

I kill 2 birds with one stone !!!!

I wear a scarf on my head ..

1) Keeps my hair out of way ( specially the snorkel thing !! )

2) Serves has a hat on SI !!! ... yeah, I'm starting to loose my hair and don't want to get sunburned on my head :no ... it does hurt :eyebrow:

Clayjar,

You seem to have it right.

I said dive with a snorkel except for overhead dive profiles. She doesn't have to wear it on her mask, I don't either. Also, I have used a full face mask for diving, and when I do, I carry a mask and snorkel on my body for emergency bailout. The snorkel is a tool like any other, and is all but manditory for use at the surface in seas. And, I use the device that I linked above for quick attachment to my mask strap.

There are more and more fold-up snorkels ot there now some would be a great alternative to the traditional catch on everything standard snorkel.

I want a double-hose snorkel that you wear like a beanie... anyone have sewing and plastics molding skills? (It'd be quite entertaining, I think.)
