Hi guys,
I have got a question.
I am a Dm, and next month I will do the IDC and IE.:14:
I remember, during my DM, I had some difficulties doing the skills, to be honest, you do them during the OWDC, but after that, you do not practise them anymore in any of the following courses!

Ok, some people are members of clubs etc..I do dive quiet a lot and work as a Dm too.
Now, I have been practicing them with some friends(instructors), and, PADI might like this or not, but there are differences, individual ones, on higher levels aswell.(Staff instructors, one told me that in Asia they do it like this etc..)

The instructor manual tells us to have a look at the videos or dvd´s, well I did, and honestly they are not complete, not enought to reproduce a near to perfect skill.
Are there any skill demonstration videos available?

Ps. I do like the PADI system (except the possibilitie centers not training there students good enough), this is just something I have noticed.;)

Greets!!

The IDC/IE itself has an incredibly rigid marking scheme which you're taught on the AI/OWSI part of the course and practice so i wouldnt worry about it. You'll be taught the way examiners will mark it so in some cases it maybe better NOT to develop an individual idea on how to do one yet.

Hi,

The best video I know of for the PADI O/W skills is the PADI O/W DVD. In your DM class your instructor should have worked with you to get your skills up to presentation quality... remember the point system?

If you want to practice the skills before the IDC you can contact an Instructor or better yet a IDC Staff Instructor and ask him or her to to get into the pool with you one night and refresh the skills.

Now I crossed over from SSI to PADI and I had a ton of trouble with some of the skills... getting the parts right, slow, exagerated and smooth. You might contact the CD you will be working with at the IDC and see what they say. Last the IDC is a teaching course and if you have holes in your background you can and will have the opportunity to work on them during the course.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your reply, yep I did go through the skills, but after some time.;)
I have the DVD, many of the skills are not complete..I just want to do them perfect:D
But a DVD, with all the skills, does not excist?

As String said, there is a specific marking system used at the IDC & IE for not only evaluating watermanship skills (AKA The Skill Circuit) but also when we mark knowledge, confined water, & open water presentations.

We know that as a DM you probably have excellent watermanship skills and can perform any task flawlessly. However, as an Instructor, you'll need to be able to DEMONSTRATE a skill. And there's a big difference between PERFORMING a skill and DEMONSTRATING it.

For example, total mask flood & clear. A no brainer that takes all of 5 seconds to do, right? But if you are demonstrating the skill so that a student can learn it, it has to be broken down into small, exaggerated actions that clearly show each component that makes up the entire skill.

So a total mask flood/clear demonstration could look like this:

1) break the seal at the top of the mask to let water in.
2) fill the mask all the way up with water (usually accompanied by drawing a finger up the front to show the water level rising).
3) press the front of the mask frame with the heel of one hand.
4) tilt head up & look up while exhaling out nose & showing with other hand that breath is being expelled through nose (usually something like tapping on the nose pocket of the mask).
5) when head is brought back down show that no water remains in mask.

Again, you'll be shown the Art of Demonstration at the IDC. In the meantime, just hone your skills.

Taaa-daaaaa! ;)

Bonne chance,

Watch the OW DVD. Take each skill and write a step by step list on how to complete each one (like SubMariner just did). Now practice off that.

When you demonstrate the skill, don't think of the skill; think about the steps. If you think 'I'm going to show you how to clear a mask'--you will clear your mask but it may be too fast. If you think about: step one-- I'm going to let some water into my mask. Step 2--look, I'm showing you all the water in my mask. Step 3--I'm now going to press the front of the mask frame with the heel of one hand....blah, blah.... you will think and demonstrate the steps. (Does that make sense?)

Don't wait for IDC to learn demonstration quality. As a DM, you should already have demonstration quality. If you go into your IDC not having each skill down you will spend much needed time on your skills rather than on something else.

Get into the pool with someone that will nit-pick your DEMONSTRATION QUALITY skills until they are perfect!

I might be able to help.

I designed a skills DVD exactly of the 20 skills from the Divemaster course to play for our IDC candidates in the IDC, for the exact same reason you are asking.

It's about 50 minutes.

We sell it for $20, but the problem is time, I'm in Honduras, so it could take a while to get to you, if you PM me an address I could give you an ETA and see if it's likely to reach you before your IDC.
