four the 4th of July, i got a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 to toast the great U. S. of A,
and ...

i very much like it ... the nose is of sea air and brine, and just lightly peated, with
a great nutty and malty flavor, and a long, lingering finish (though a bit on the
alcoholic side).

for $36 including tax, it's a very nice drink.

alright ... Phase I of "Operation Excuse to Drink" is now officially over.

i have gone out and sampled quite a few single malts, sort of getting a feel for
what's out there. these are the malts:

Dalwhinnie 15
Laphroaig 10 (excellent)
Old Pultaney 12
Highland Park 12 (excellent)
Strathisla 12
Bowmore Legend
Aberlour 10
Auchentoshan Select
Bunnahabhain 12

and now, Phase II is ready to commence ... "Spend lots of Money all at Once"

i am now aiming for somewhat more established malts, though at a higher cost.
i just ordered the following:

Lagavulin 16
Macallan 12
Talisker 10

we'll see how those pave the way for what i hope is a series of very nice malt experiences.

up and coming malts i'd love to try:

Ardbeg 10
Balvenie Double Wood 12
Bladnoch 10 Flora and Fauna
Caol Ila 18
Cragganmore 12
Glen Scotia 14
Glenfarclas 15
Glenlivet 12 French Oak
Laphroaig 15
Longmorn 15

i see a lot of cash spent in my future

Would it be rude to suggest that you drink too much?

Dalwhinnie 15
Laphroaig 10 (excellent) Yes, it is. So are the QC and CS
Old Pultaney 12 Looking for a bottle. Update: found one. In my cellar :)
Highland Park 12 (excellent) No wonder you are/were short on cash ;-)
Strathisla 12
Bowmore Legend Have not tried it. I've had McClelland which is a young Bowmore.
Aberlour 10 Did nothing for me
Auchentoshan Select I have a bottle waiting
Bunnahabhain 12 Very light for an Islay but an enjoyable malt. My wife's favorite.

i just ordered the following:

Lagavulin 16 Oooooooohhhhhh. What more to say?
Macallan 12 Nice. Sweet undertones.
Talisker 10 I like this one. Peppery, bold.

we'll see how those pave the way for what i hope is a series of very nice malt experiences.

up and coming malts i'd love to try:

Ardbeg 10 Oh yeah !!!
Balvenie Double Wood 12
Bladnoch 10 Flora and Fauna
Caol Ila 18 Very nice as well. For me runs close behind Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg
Cragganmore 12 So so. Not to my particular liking
Glen Scotia 14
Glenfarclas 15
Glenlivet 12 French Oak
Laphroaig 15 I can only assume it's better than the others. More $$$ as well
Longmorn 15

i see a lot of cash spent in my future

So do I. By both of us.

Last night, after being eliminated from the poker tournament, a friend poured a few fingers of Macallen Cask into a snifter for me.

Whew! I'm usually a Knob Creek kinda guy, but that stuff blew me away.

My wife won the tourney, calling her final opponent's all-in with pocket aces.

She drove us home:D. All in all, a perfect evening.

Up on cripple creek, she sends me,
If I spring a leak, she mends me,
I don't have to speak, and she defends me,
A drunkard's dream, if I ever did see one...

Was the MacAllan "cask strength"? If so, no wonder it blew you away; CS is usually supposed to be cut with water, otherwise it pummels your taste buds into submission.

Aye.

While I admit I'm no afficionado, I don't believe I could ever bring myself to add water to fine whiskey. I believe that was the finest scotch ever to pass my lips.

Last night's host hesitated for the briefest of moments, and then smiled in tolerant sympathy, when another guest asked for his drink over ice.

I'll always take mine neat.

All things being equal I would agree but CS whisky is about 60% ABV and when whisky is bottled it is usually "cut" with water to reduce its ABV content so the alcohol does not numb the taste buds. Adding some (to your taste) cool, clean water will actually allow you to enjoy more of the nuances. Same can be said for non-CS; a drop or so of clean, cool water frees some of the subtler aspects of whisky.

It took me 10 years to convince my wife to stop drowning her whisky in cold, ice cubed water.

Agree with GM. I take all my scotch neat and room temperature with a splash of spring water. Even an 80 proof scotch will numb your taste buds. And even if it doesn't, a few splashes of water really opens some scotches up. Try taking a whiff of your favorite before and after adding a touch of water. I can almost always pick up a lot more scotchy goodness after adding some water.
