WaterDawg:
Man I cant find Laphoraig anywhere in this freaking town! thanks for the link!

BevMo also has a pretty nice scotch (and beer, wine and other liquor) selection when you have trouble finding stuff.

Thanks for the list of cheapies, Andy - a few of those are new to me.

DOH, of that list, i've tried the following. all are pretty good. i rank them as follows:

Highland Park 12: by far my favorite, second only to Laphroaig. It has nice smokey
and lightly peat taste, with a full, warm body. the finish if very nice and long. This
one really grows on you too, just keeps getting more and more nuanced.

Old Pulteney 12. This is a crisp, "salty" malt. it has interesting nut
flavors. light to medium body. nice crisp finish.

Strathisla 12. Similar to Old Pulteney. a bit harsher on the throat. very
light "sappy" finish. my least favorite. still not bad, just not that interesting.

ok, well, i couldn't go maltless too long, so went to the local ABC liquors
to celebrate my Advanced Nitrox/Deco Procedures class, and picked up
a bottle of Bowmore Legend for $24.00.

it is an Islay, and you can smell the peat. it has a nice palate and finish, though
it is a light whisky, not close to full-bodied.

i would recommend it. the peat is light to medium, and though light, the finish lingers.
and for $24??? holy cow, a steal

I was not very thrilled with the Bowmore Legend that I drank. Of course that might be because my first Islays were Laphroaig and Lagavulin.

How much more for a bottle of Ardbeg?

i looked for it, but they didn't carry Ardbeg (remember, it's ABC LIquors)

have you tried either Auchentoshan 10 or Aberlour 10? info would be appreciated

I have not tried the Auchentoshan but I've been told by some who have that it's a gem for the price. I have had Aberlour but do not recall being particularly impressed. Hence, I have none in my cabinet.

Have you visited www.whiskymag.com and www.maltmadness.com?
Those sites might provide some information for you.

yeah, i've read through those, also through Michael Jackson's book

some good info there. i might try the Auchentoshan.

Sorry to hear you are broke. Too much $$$ spend on Mousers and diving?
