Side mounting with AL 80s and deco tank

The reason you move the clip is so the cylinder remains in the same place (along your side). The deco bottle remains similarly unchanged.

What are your primary tanks in this case AL 80? If the deco cylinder is clipper to the drop rings, but you have to slide or clip an AL forward as it’s breathed, does the deco tank remain clipped off and is just forced further down as you slide the tank forward?

The deco cylinder would not be forced further down. Remember, we move the cylinders as they become positively buoyant. They should sit in the same place once moved as they did prior to the move. Therefore the deco cylinder is not getting pushed down as the "back gas" cylinder is being clipped to a forward d-ring but then floating up back into position.

For the record, I use two fixed d-rings on each side and move them once during a dive.

The deco tank stays in the same position when sliding the d-ring forward or clipping it forward. It is not forced further down.

The stage/deco tank is limited in its upward movement by the tank sitting above it. The upper tank is hardly ever so empty that you have to adjust its position. Don‘t forget that your dive plan contains quite a gas reserve in a deco-dive (lost gas, lost deco-gas or whatever plan you prefer).

well, you could use sliding d-rings if you want to look perfect the whole dive long but it is some work to move the sliding d-ring forward if the bungee of the deco-tank crosses the attachment of the tank. It is doable but not great. Or dive steel tanks which start floating later than AL80.

So how do you prevent the bungee from the deco tank crossing the attachment on the main tank? Will moving the deco tank clip down further on the deco tank work or maybe starting the d ring attachment point for the main tanks further up on the waist belt?

Other way around, my stage/deco rigging is a few inches higher on the tank. This pulls it up and toward your feet when clipped off.
