Are you confusing the Cancun airport with the Cozumel airport? Trips out of the Cozumel airport are strictly controlled by the taxi union representing the shared van drivers. In the past when other operators have attempted to provide service the airport entrance was blockaded by protesters and violence was threatened. There are at least two companies that do transfers. I was there on November 4. We walked off the airport property and tried to grab a cab. A very angry taxi boss told us to go back to the airport and get a shuttle. I continued to try to flag a cab but each one that stopped was told by the boss not to pick us up. We had to walk approximately six blocks before taxis were allowed to pick us up. Apparently this rule has always been in place, but now they’re actually enforcing it. Just FYI
I have heard of this sort of thing happening several times over the past few years.I was there on November 4. We walked off the airport property and tried to grab a cab. Well. Here is what happened on Saturday. I asked at the counter if they were limiting capacity. She said yes - 50%. We get our tickets and board a van. We are passengers 5 and 6. Luggage doors close and driver gets in. I’m thinking “this is good”. Van moves to only then back up to a different boarding spot. We wait about ten minutes and a family of five starts boarding. I ask the driver what’s going on since the ticket counter said “50% capacity”. The driver looks at me like I have a hole in my head. I get out, get our bags and our tickets back and go get a refund. The counter didn’t care they they told me one thing and their driver was doing something else. Offer a private taxi for $46USD. Not happening.
walked off the airport and as we were leaving a taxi was leaving. I waved at them and he was waiting for me across the street. He pulled forward about 100m to get more out of view.
160 pesos - which was less than the $10 USD for the shuttle.
Yeah. I was more bothered by the ticket agent lying to me. If you are planning on not following the rules or claiming you are exempt from the rules, just tell me that. I would have skipped the whole charade. The guy in charge of the island, mayor or governor, Pedro - he really seems to try and keep people on top of things, he really does seem to care. It seems that what happens at the airport and passenger ferries is outside his reach as it's Federal. I'm sorry to hear that is happening really because the local people and businesses are trying so hard to make things work....... it gives a ****** impression for the rest of the island.
