Do you guys recommend I try the 5ft hose as suggested? Or go with the 7ft one?

If you are big, you'll probably prefer the 7'. I'm 6'2 and I don't have any issues with the length, even when I don't tuck the hose under my canister light. My wife uses a 5' hose (5'5'). I can dive with the 5', but it doesn't "feel" as nice.

Looks like the 5' hose is going to be it for me. I'm 5' 3 1/2 and small all around.

Thanks to everyone for the great advice and suggestions. It's greatly appreciated.

Bob (Grateful Diver),

You typed out the best simple explanation for a long hose that I have seen. I will plan on looking over your setup very closely and picking your brain extensively when we are in Bonaire. I am very interested in seeing some such things up close and in person. The questions that I have at the moment may be answered just by looking.

Let's plan to do a couple of air-shares, and the advantages will become immediately obvious ...

Is there a place where I can see an illustration or get a good description of how to "lay" the hose, how to route it? Over left shoulder first? etc. thanks

http://www.sfdj.com/spring/dir.html that should answer your question I think.

FWIW, I'm going with a long hose and I'm new to diving. Several of my instructors had that setup and air sharing was much easier than with a 'buddy' in class with a traditional style octo.

There are a couple of good pics and explanations in the rest of the thread as well. You can see the hose routing pretty well against the yellow of Pug's drysuit :D

This might go without saying, but since you are a recreational diver, ditch the snorkel (if you use one) if you go with the long hose as it will interfere with deployment of the long hose and well, it's just not needed when scuba diving.
