No back to the thread hijacking. Hows the vis Chris and what are the water temps?

I was in today for some research diving off the URI Bay Campus. Water temp was 37 F. Vis was 15+ ft.

I agree, I don't think your chances of locating a wreck that way are very good. It's tricky enough to find wrecks using a GPS and a sounder on a boat. But swimming that far out and then landing yourself on the wreck without any instrumentation etc would be tough. You'd need some really good ranges to triangulate yourself onto it.

Basically just not worth the effort.

My point is not the difficulty of locating the target; it's the fact the NH is not a wreck in the classic sense so if the OP is looking to dive a shallow wreck he'd be better off driving to Gilford NH and swimming to dive the Lady of the Lake.

I KNOW what it is! Just want to try something different (i.e. reaching it not using a boat). Want to know if anyone has actually done so and what advice they can offer.

I've done something similar. A late fall, several hundred yard swim, with doubles, on Lake Winn. It sckd and there were no waves or boats with which to contend. I would highly discourage such an attempt in the ocean where waves and boats will be almost assured. Then again, I won't call you foolish for sucking it up, being a man and doing it anyway !!!
