I have booked a trip to Cozumel in December. We are staying at the Scuba Club Cozumel. Unlimited shore diving I am told. Is there anyone out there that can give me a shore diving briefing for that location? I have read several threads that were helpfull, but I am looking for Depths, Currents, Hazards and Things of interest. Compass headings are helpfull also, but probably not as important as they are here in Western Pa where vis of 20ft. is good. Thanks (have read about drift diving from the lighthouse - would be interested in the logistics of that also).

When you have the time, click on my webpage Jim's Web Page for many years of trip reports to Scuba Club Cozumel.

Here's the short version: You can either enter the water by a giant stride off the pier or walk down a set of stairs into a protected "well" and then swim through a cut to get off shore. The current normally runs South to North, so you will want to start your dive into the current by turning left out of the cut. Don't rush, move slowly, look for small stuff. If you parallel the shore line, you will swim under SCC's pier, over lots of concrete rubble, past the second pier - off to your right is the pyramid. When you have burned through 2/3rd of your air, turn and drift (no need to swim) back to the exit point. An alternative is to swim directly out (West) to the remains of the old pier, an artificial reef with lots to see, then turn South into the current as in the previous example. Depth = 20 feet, you can't get lost. The third alternative is to stay in front of the hotel, visit the artificial reef, poke around the pier, look under rock piles, etc. until you run out of air - about two hours of diving.

The lighthouse drift - get a cab to the lighthouse, drift back to the hotel. It's probably better if you don't do this dive until you have done a normal shore dive - that way you will know when you are back at the hotel. (There are only two piers between the lighthouse and Scuba Club).

Coz isn't famous for it's shore diving, that's for sure, but for years the shore diving out in front of Scuba Club has been rated some of the best on the island.

Actually the stretch from International Pier, north to just beyond Scuba Club is "shore dive alley" if you will and with some poking around, there is much to be seen along the entire stretch.

We were shore diving off hotel coz next door a couple weeks ago which means we were in SCC's pier area. There are eels, squid, drummer fish, baby groupers...all kinds of cool stuff within 20 yards of that pier. It is a shore dive that was certainly worth doing. Enjoy!

exactly what Jlyle said....... and his pictures, too. :D

we enjoyed the dives there each day, either afternoon or night, more than the morning boat dives! Tons of eels, octopus, and crabs, and every kind of fish you see on all your other dives.

Thanks to all,
jlyle - great pictures and thanks for the dive plans, that is what I need until I get acclimated -exactly what I was looking for

Here's a question I haven't seen addressed before. I know Scuba Club Cozumel is a private club only open to hotel guests. Can folks shore dive from, say Blue Angel, and exit at Scuba Club?
I cannot speak for SCC, but I have done that and no one said anything to me.
