*sigh*

What are we coming to? That children do things like this and, as if it weren't enough already, are so stupid that they break in the next day to try it again!?! I see a black future ahead.

Al Mialkovsky:
These are idiot kids.
I disagree. They're far worse than that. I'm sure most of us (myself included) pulled our share of idiot stunts when we were kids, but this goes far beyond mere childish stupidity. Breaking and entering the aquarium to do nothing more than goof around after hours would be the act of an idiot kid. But when it's done with the specific intent to torture, mutilate, and kill animals in a way designed to prolong their agony as much as possible, it shows they have a disturbing lack of the basic morals, scruples, and sense of right and wrong most of us learn in early childhood. Wanton torture of and cruelty to animals during childhood is a common factor among serial killers. If these kids were willing to go to this much effort for a "thrill kill", it would only be a matter of time before they moved on to larger, more interesting prey.

These are much more than foolish kids who deserve a slap on the wrist and a stern lecture. They have shown themselves to be sociopaths, and they need to be treated as such - locked away where they can't inflict their utter disregard for life on other kids whose parents managed to install a sense of decency in them just like the rest of us. It's certainly regrettable that they turned out like this, but all the hand-wringing and cries of "They're just kids!" in the world won't change their vicious nature. Maybe they can be rehabilitated, maybe not. But it needs to be done behind prison walls, so the majority of people who actually know how to behave can live their lives in peace, and animals who've harmed no one have a chance to live another night without being killed for someone's amusement.

I am a stern believer that they should be punished harshly and be given proper therapy. I can also say I completely agree with Reeveseye.

In addition to the max fine (which will get the parents attention), make 'em work at the Marine Mammal Rescue center in Laguna Beach. Make them give a lecture on what they've learned, held at the aquarium as a fund-raiser and open to the public. ... gotta believe that time spent with these amazing creatures will soften their obviously hard hearts a bit.

can anyone say chum slick?

Al Mialkovsky:
OK first of all I think some of us to take a deep breath. These are idiot kids. They killed sea life for no good reason but they aren't child molestors. There is hope for them.

Parents need to be held very responsible that's for certain. They need to face some serious repercusions. But let's remember not to hold our breath kids, breathe now :)

The one thing all serial killers have in common...is they began ( as young kids) torturing animals...

No there probably isn't any hope for these kids, given their parents...where were they when all this went down?

Let's just save all of us in California some money and serve them up for shark bait!
