John C, how is your new RB working out? Before you become the great John Chatternton diving action hero, LOL, what things were the most difficult for you as a new diver and how did you overcome those things?

UBB,

Do I have the Kung ** grip??? I want the Kung ** grip!!! I mean it!!

As a new diver I knew nothing. Then I learned a couple of things and I thought I knew everything. Then I learned some more and I realized I knew nothing. Now I worry that I learned things years ago and have since forgotten them?? I guess the most difficult thing is dealing with ones limitations???

I am in the Dominican Republic and although I was diving yesterday (on open circuit), I have not been diving in a month. I have been working with several new systems for locating and documenting wrecks which has taken all my time and mental energy. I wish I was more smart. However, I am having a blast.

I am going to Israel in a week or two and hopefully I will take my new sidemount rig, although I have been offered the use of a Meg (conventional setup).

Cheers

JC

Yeah, They did a DSD on 352...It is also JC's favorite episode because his favorite place to be is in Morehead City:D...
...Nothing better than NC diving and a big plate of Smithfield's Barbeque and fried chicken after the dive...Aye John...Give a raise of the hand and say Hallelujah! Hallelujah brother....I think I will have another plate of barbeque...and throw in a couple more pieces of that there fried yard bird...

John has been around George Purifoy for so long that he is starting to sound like a hoi tider...The real reason they didn't do anymore DSD episodes, for those of you who don't know, is because John was beginning to talk in too much Down East brogue and no one could understand what he was saying anymore....

Ate there this weekend John....Combo plate, hush puppies and a huge glass of ice tea...Hallelujah!!!!

BR,

First, great photo. YOu have captured your essence. It was nice that you put some pants on for this one.

George is not only a great guy, but a crackerjack diver. He truly loves diving and shipwrecks and he is one of the people who have helped to make wreck diving what it is today. He is a legend, and my hero. However, he does talk funny?? Unlike my friends in Maine. Chowda anyone??

Aside from George, the wrecks in NC are awesome. Ubots in 100 fsw!! Please.

Hey John,

While we have launched the "Operation Bottomtime" forum on our Good Causes Section, why don't you tell us why you are involved with SUDS and what you hope to do with it.

It's gotten really quiet on this thread lately. I think I hear virtual crickets chirping inside my computer.

Bruce,

I am alive, but you don't see Richie on here do you??? Nevermind, I don't want to kill the ending for you. I hope you like the book. Congratulations on becoming a diver.

Addictive, I guess?? Then again, ScubaBoard seems to have avoided much of the inane bullying that has infected a lot of other forums, so this has been a fun place for me. It is more about divers talking about diving and I like to come on here when I have the time.

We did not renew our URL for the DSD website. After 57 episodes we were not making any additional shows, and we have been out of production for more than 2 years. It seemed like a good idea to drop the site, and part of us moving on to other projects?? Someone brought my attention to the fact almost immediately after we dropped the URL it is now some sort of porn site, with nothing to do with diving or shipwrecks? My assumtion is that they seek traffic from recently discontinued sites and they do this to a lot of dropped sites?? Then again, I am just guessing. There are almost no naked pictures of Richie and/or me on the site.

This particular "Interview" forum is Doc's idea and a spin off from another forum which had a reasonably narrow focus. This is supposed to be a place where divers can ask me questions, and I can try to come up with some sort of answer. They called it an interview, and I guess in a way it is an ongoing interview, just with you supplying the questions.

Cheers

JC

Don't look now...Richie has been spotted in a few places here and there...Careful what you say (errr write) John!:D

John I just wanted to say that it was a pleasure meeting you at BTS this weekend. As usual you were as gracious as ever taking time to sign anything in sight. Come to think of it I should have gotten you to sign my billboard I mean shirt.

I just finished Shadow Divers. I am not a history buff. I don't know much about WWII, or U-boats. So this book was just eye-opening for me! I found the suspense in the research, as much, if not more than, the diving.

I purchased The Last Dive at the same time. I'm not going to bother reading it after reading Shadow Divers.

This book, along with all the incident reports, etc., go to show that we really do not know what causes leading to the deaths of divers who perish while underwater. The part in the book where the dad dies at the surface was telling and poingant.

I probably will not read Gary's book. And I will pass along Shadow Divers to non-divers for the U-Boat history lessons.

Last Dive is well worth reading. They are both good books with different emphasis on some of the same events.

Last Dive is worth the read (IMHO) just to hear the author recount his experience with DCS. Scary and educational.
