It's an Italian company named after the founder Ludivico Mares.

Seems Italian pronunciation would be most appropriate? As per post 2 above.

Interesting... I always assumed the company's name was simply because "mare" in Italian means "sea".

No. Ludovico Mares was a real person, a pioneer of diving and spear-hunting before WW2. In 1949 he started his manifacture of diving equipment in Rapallo.
