I have only ever heard it pronounced "Mar-rays".

In Italian we pronounce as it is written. So "mares"
"a" in Italian is pronounced as the initial of English' "up".
"e" is pronounced as the initial of English' "excuse".
 
I've always just called it Mares (same as a group of female horses) and the dive shop still takes my money if I buy one or have one serviced..... so it must be right !
