Seems Italian pronunciation would be most appropriate? As per post 2 above.

No. Ludovico Mares was a real person, a pioneer of diving and spear-hunting before WW2. In 1949 he started his manifacture of diving equipment in Rapallo.

Off topic, I have worked with a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) who's last name is Outlaw. Odd how sometime names fit into a business or occupation.
