I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes by answering this, but I've been reading about this lately. You push a distress button on the VHF and it sends your location to the Coasties.

That is correct... a little button with a red spring loaded *DON'T TOUCH THAT!!!* cover.

170... I hope you are getting the 90 hp four stroke. It idles smoothly, sips gas and doesn't stink like a 2 stroke.

Now for the tank racks... I have an old set of roll control but didn't want to put them on the 170. First off, I wanted to get weight to the front. Three steel 104s or two sets of double 104s does the trick. An ice chest can fit right in front. I want the sides clear for walking and the rear clear for scooters or extra tanks laid down in foam *racks*.

We have only had the boat a short time and maybe have 6 dives off of it so I am still working my way through logistics with it but so far no back-tracking on anything. The other boat we use for diving is much slower (7.5kts) but it hauls tons and we can dive 8 with a tender and driver to boot. The Whaler takes a little more organization and so far we have only dove two but I can see four easy enough. With two divers, extra tanks and a 65# scooter each we can still hit 40mph and burn <3gph.

Next addition is a 27 gallon Pate tank which should be here next week or so. :D

Uncle Pug:
The antenna is clamped to the console rail and originally I had the wire ziptied to the outside of the rail but that just didn't look tidy.

Hmmm. I only counted maybe 7 zip ties in this pic. Must have been a late night. I'm confident you'll ratchet that number up to a couple of dozen by the time I get up there in September.

Lookin' fine! Less drive time = more dive time.

If you are ordering a 2004 Montauk 170 see if you can get the RPS from a 2003. Check out the photo's of my RPS on the first page of this thread.

Last years model has a molded opening in the top of the RPS with a removable piece (unscrew and leave the screws out) that the cushion is snapped to. To *open* the top of the RPS I just lift the cushion and have direct access to the top of the tank. Even after I install the 27 gallon Pate there will be enough room under there for a couple of life jackets.

Lake Union SeaRay/Boston Whaler sent me some pictures showing how they cut and access hole in the top of the solid RPS and put a deck plate in for filling a large Tempo fuel tank. That looks uncomfortable to be sitting on!

Uncle Pug-
Thanks for the reply! I'll have to check to see if there's any possibility of getting an '03 RPS. I agree, that tank seating arrangement doesn't look to comfortable! I've got my eye on Pate 27 as well. Good thing the Pate fills from behind the seat.
Your comments on tank storage make a lot of sense. I'll have to get to boat in the driveway and do some dry runs on location. I probably won't see the boat until June so I have some time to think.
On the power side, I went 2 stroke. My 'master plan' is to pick up a 6 hp trolling motor in the 4 stroke line for salmon fishing. Running from point A to B I can handle the noise for the 2 grand I saved. Life's full of choices.............

Chuck... I've seen your site... excellent... and I really liked this:

"If a shark bites piece out of a whaler, he's going to get indigestion and fiberglass splinters in his gums. If a shark bites an inflatable, he's going to get a blast of air, and then some divers for lunch. (All kidding aside, I've seen video of a Great White Shark biting an inflatable, which was fortunately unoccupied at the time.)"

:D

I've got a buddy with a Montauk 170, and you can do a back roll entry,
even with both rails still on. You sit down in the gap
between the front and side rails, with your feet twisted
around into the area in front of the console. You just roll
in and twist a little. It's actually pretty easy.
