I’m thinking that they likely do the refurbs in batches and give them all a new outer shell with the R marked refurb date as @scubadada noted was present on his.
I’m thinking the new parts content is likely even higher. Outer shell takes the most abuse, so is likely replaced. The circuit board may get a test and reprogram to confirm it’s functional, but that’s likely it. If it fails, I’d be shocked if any diagnosis or rework is even attempted. Most likely not cost effective.

So, in most cases, I’m thinking the base may be all that is reused.
I’d bet the over sticker was for a later FW or other update that they went back and applied to the refurb inventory to bring them all up to latest manufacturing spec?
Yeah, I’m inclined to agree. The etched R in the shell is most likely to identify it as refurbed, the label is likely to indicate the date that it completed calibration. In the event of a critical firmware update, they could use this to identify units that have the latest and those that do not.

Agreed!

I too reached out to PPS to see if I could find out the branding of my FP serial numbered transmitter but did not get a response (yet). And, my email to Aqualung bounced back as undeliverable. I did pull that FP transmitter out of the sealed bag/packaging and put it on a reg and tank. Works great. Surprisingly it has a 10/18 manufacture date on it and the battery is still good. No low battery warnings from my Teric and I put it through some tests for a few hours of connected/transmitting time. I do have a spare ready to go just in case as it would not surprise me if the life of that battery is quite reduced given it's almost 4 years old.
I was able to send Aqua Lung a message using their contact form and got an acknowledgement that it was received. Messages to 2 different email help addresses were undeliverable, great business.

I’ll add my part to this thread.
My wife’s Genesis Escort DC came with one of these Pelagic transmitters.
I’ve attached a photo of SN below. It has no letters on it, just numbers.

I did have a question: We’ve had it a number of years, and as a DC it works pretty well. But as many of you that own this transmitter likely know, that battery cover on these is… well, let’s call it less than brilliantly designed.
Over the years the slot used to remove that battery cap has gotten completely gnarled up, and is now impossible to remove. The next time I remove it, using myriad tools, will likely kill the cover once and for all.
The computer still works great, as does (I suspect) the transmitter. Just need new batteries.
Does anyone know where I can source a replacement cover/cap for that thing? They must be made of unobtanium, because no one seems to have them.
I’ve looked at getting a replacement transmitter, but that’s running $400. I’d hate to do that for a unit that still works.
And not sure if I’d be able to take advantage of that $150 swap-out with one of the manufacturers mentioned earlier in this thread, or I’d be all over *that* :)

Thanks in advance,
GM

Get hold of Huish and see if they'll send you a RMA.
Thanks for the link. I poked around the RMA site for a bit to see. They want the serial number of the old unit (a BM number) which I don’t have. Not sure how they’ll Re/act when they get a non-oceanic unit back in the mail :D
I may still try it and see how far I get. Guess, worst that could happen is they decide to just keep my transmitter :) but more likely it would just be wasted shipping back and forth.

Instead of going all negative and assuming the worst, why not just call them and ask?

I asked Richard Morton at Dive-Tronix about Shearwater legacy transmitters. His response was "The older models started with BM, then came the FK. The FP's were sold under another manufacturers name, maybe Aqua Lung or Oceanic." This is consistent with the post by @ScubaTexas

Richard sent me a picture of a Shearwater transmitter

The FP prefix remains a mystery
I know this is an old thread but FP prefix is definitely Oceanic

Here is an updated spreadsheet including the information about the FP prefix. I was never able to find the prefix used by Sherwood or Tusa. I have not seen an Apeks transmitter.
