I asked Richard Morton at Dive-Tronix about Shearwater legacy transmitters. His response was "The older models started with BM, then came the FK. The FP's were sold under another manufacturers name, maybe Aqua Lung or Oceanic." This is consistent with the post by @ScubaTexas

Richard sent me a picture of a Shearwater transmitter

The FP prefix remains a mystery

maybe sherwood? I think they had a rebadged version of the oceanic atom at one point?
Sherwood still sells the Amphos Air 2.0, two gas, AI computer running DSAT. I was not able to locate a photo of a transmitter showing a serial number.

Tusa used to offer the IQ-950 Zen, a 3 gas, AI computer running PZ+. The user manual is still available but I was not able to locate a photo of a transmitter with a serial number.

Dates may also come into play ...

Shearwater (non-Swift), Yellow, 04/2019, SN: FK-016978
Shearwater (non-Swift), Grey, 11/2018, SN: FK-010833
I’ve got 3 transmitters. Two of them I can confirm are Oceanic, and I believe the third is Oceanic as well, but as I got it used, I can’t confirm 100%.

BM 141040 / 0719R
BM 107192 / 0911
BM 095931 / 0110

The first one I got from Oceanic/Huish after sending one in for service. Not sure if the R indicates it was refurbished or refers to a design change being applied.

It seems to be pretty clear that Oceanic only used BM as a prefix, as that is the only prefix listed on the Oceanic Service page. Since Shearwater used BM early than switched to FK, I would assume that early versions were all BM prefix, and PPS decided to differentiate later.

I heard from a friend that his 2 Aeris transmitters both have the serial number prefix BM

So, what do we know so far?

I'm hoping to get more responses in this thread, I'm sure there are many MH8A transmitters out there. In fact, I know there are at least 120 Teric owners out there from my repair/replacement thread. There must be quite a few Aqua Lung owners and, hopefully, even a few Sherwood and Tusa owners. I'm also hoping to learn a bit more about the Oceanic/Huish replacement service.

Thanks for doing this. I don't think it will change my life, but it certainly is interesting!

Hi Mel,

I'm particularly interested in how this applies to the Oceanic/Huish replacement program. Replacing a failed transmitter with a new one for $120, regardless of age, is a good deal. I had an Oceanic transmitter, purchased in 2010, replaced in 2017. This transmitter recently failed. I shipped it to Huish last Friday and the replacement is already back in the mail to me!

My two transmitters were both Oceanic, with the SN prefix BM. I wonder how Oceanic/Huish decides whether a transmitter qualifies for the replacement service. Does it have anything to do with the SN prefix, or perhaps just the serial number. It would be pretty easy for PPS to track the serial numbers going to each brand. Aeris, Hollis, Oceanic, and some Shearwater transmitters may all have the SN prefix BM. The Aqua Lung transmitters have a different appearance than all the others.

I have emailed Aqua Lung/PPS, asking about the significance of the SN prefix.

By the way, have you posted the SN prefixes of your transmitters yet?

Best, Craig
