Bob, how did one team member end up with a deco obligation when the other did not? There seem to be other peices to this story.
There always are ... ;)

In this case, it was my second dive of the day ... both of them pretty aggressive profiles. He was on his first.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have to ask - Wouldn't deco strategies normally have been covered as part of your pre-dive check/planning (GUE EDGE, SADDDDD, etc) ? I'm not trying to pick on anyone, but there's something about this story that I'm struggling to reconcile in my mind.

1) let's assume that Bob went over this during the pre-dive, but the diver still exited the water without Bob- ooops
2) maybe Bob had a brain fart and didn't reveal the deco strategy- the other diver still exited the water without Bob- ooops

Anyway you slice it, there was a team failure

Computer managed dive/deco (possibly unplanned) = hard to all stay on same page.

If the buddy was unaware of the deco obligation, its also unlikely they had enough rock bottom gas for Bob in event of a failure. Good thing there weren't any other than the seperation.

Bob was diving a Suunto?

It wasn't a planned deco dive ... rather a dive where I told my buddy I'd done a pretty aggressive dive a short while before he got there, and depending on how long we were at depth, I'd probably incur some deco obligation. I told him I'd let him know on the way in ... which I did. He made an assumption at 20 feet, and it turned out to be a poor one.

Definitely not a DIR way to plan a dive ...

do it easy:

1) yup
2) nope, and yup

Team failure ... yup.

Moral of the story ... even GUE-trained divers can screw up. Most people do at some point or another until they get enough experience at doing things a certain way to make it second-nature.

You know me way better than that, Richard ... we were both on doubles ... we each ended the dive with enough gas to go back and do it again ... and still have adequate reserves.

How ... judgmental ... of you (why am I not surprised) ...
