I think one of the biggest problems is that, if your console is your only depth gauge, it's going to be something you want to look at very frequently -- on ascent, as much as every few seconds. That leaves you with two options -- secure the console where you can see it, or hold it in your hand -- which then ties up a hand. If you are having to hang onto a line in current and vent your BC, you'll be looking for that elusive third hand . . . This is one of the big reasons I like wrist gauges. But if you have a console, you may be able to secure it to a chest d-ring in such a manner that you can see it without having to hold it.
