I like diving up at Makaha Beach Park (Caverns). Nice beach and a place for some of the non-diving part of the family to hang out. I'm not sure what it would be like on the holiday, being new to the island and all.

Wow, isn't that a good swim out to the Caverns from the beach? Even hiking out the right side and going off by Rell's Reef seems like it'd be good for the soul. Might be interesting to try... Great beach in general tho'; it's ground-zero for the Waianae coast.

...Rules vary for county parks.

Maui county parks it's all "first come first served" unless there is a structure that you have reserved via permits from the county...

Tim

P.S. I didnt' realize that old airport beach (the one on Maui I assume...) was a state park... I had just assumed it was county.

I guess that all depends on what you mean by good swim. I usually just roll over on my back and kick out, shooting the breeze with my team mates.

My definition of a "good swim" in calm water would be 500 yards or more ... anything over 1/2 mile is not going to happen ;) (I try to keep surface swims under 200 yards)

I also find that the long surface swims are really nice for conversation - great way to get to know your dive buddies.

Aloha, Tim

for shore diving it would have been the best, but see what you can get....the kahala kai could hold us all...but he might want $500 for a private charter
Thats wouldn't bad... How many peopel are going?

If we do Kahala Kai, the parking there is metered by the pier and yes the parking meter persons check them and write out tickets (.50 for 30 minutes or $80 ticket). There is parking around the backside but it might fill up fast seeing as how it is in Waikiki. I used to dive off Capt Carl's boat all the time (Kahala Kai). How long can you get the boat for? Just the dives or for the bbq also?

I'll go and talk to Karl this week and see what he can offer us...right now it looks like we are in the teens as far as # people that are joining us. I think the Kahala Kai can hold up to 40 or more.

Anybody else? would this be a good choice for you?

As far as doing boat dives, I guess it would depend on how much the cost would break down for each diver.

Normally Labor Day weekend is one of the last weekends that I have a chance to shore dive up on the North Shore, so that's a factor that has me pulling for the North Shore option.
