OK the Trench it is. Never having done anything like this I was wondering if we'll need a permit?
How long will you be here Tim?

When another dive club I belong to had their annual picnic a few weeks ago, there was mention that if the attendees numbered over a certain amount of people, we would need a permit. I think the number they were tossing around was 30 - but don't hold me to that, as I was just reading the organizational emails going back and forth and wasn't part of that conversation.

I suppose a quick call to parks & recreation might provide the answer.

It looks to me that we should be ok if the number stays below 50 and it's not a commercial or exhibition or competitive event. See Sec3:1-2 on http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/parks/rules/picnic.htm

The Trench is ok with me for a dive but on Labor Day, Alii Beach is going to be packed to da max by bigger tribes...

The Trench sounds fine for a dive but on Labor Day, Alii Beach is going to be packed to da max by bigger tribes...

I know what you mean! What would you suggest?

Really, the only place I can think of is Shark's Cove. Most of the dive shops would've quit running classes there by mid-August and it's not known as a picnic spot by the unwashed masses. Can't think of anyplace along the Waianae coast; well at least, not anyplace with restrooms, showers, someplace for non-divers to splash around, and no Labor Day hordes. Same for the east side. Well, back to Waianae, Kahe and Electric Beach are possible; the cars should be safe enough if we're not all in the water at once. There's a little park past Tracks and before Nanakuli/Zablan Beach, but the diving's not that great and the entry/exit is a climb to a rocky "beach" (and I use the term loosely).

Assuming everything stays as it is I'll have to leave early Tuesday Morning at the latest... (I start work at 9am)

Aloha, Tim

You know, I kind of forgot about the whole holiday crowd thing. bluemagoo's right - it will be crazy crowded up there.

Went diving at Shark's Cove on 7/04 - drove past Three Tables at 7:15 am and the parking was almost completely full. Shark's Cove parking was empty, but by the time we returned from our first dive (sometime between 8:45 and 9) the lot was completely full as well as the parking on alongside the road.

OK...I guess if some of us get there early enough we can save a spot and get set up. What should be our starting/meeting time?

anywhere we go is gonna be crazy crowded. we need to be there early... like 8 am early. is it still at the trench/alii beach park? cant see grilling/picnic-ing being that great at sharks cove. there is space at E-beach, but the area isnt as nice

at alii park there is plenty of parking on the road if we all get there at a reasonable time, it's not a long trek with gear either, half the time we end up gearing up on the raod and walking down to the beach.
